Celebrity Equinox ~ Day 5

Thursday, March 17 ~ Sea Day

Once again, we set the clocks back one hour last night to prepare for our arrival in Costa Rica tomorrow.  Between that, and going to bed early last night, we were awake and ready for breakfast at 7am.  It was really disappointing that the main dining room did not open for breakfast until 8am.  There were lots of people awake and waiting for breakfast, so we really wished they opened at 7am, especially with changing our clocks back last night.  We debated going to the buffet again, but after eating there the last 2 days, we were really looking forward to a change of pace at the dining room.  To hold us over, we went to Cafe al Bacio for some caffeine and a pastry (which looked better than it tasted).

image

By the time 8am rolled around, there was a huge line to enter the MDR. They seated everyone quickly but the wait staff seemed overwhelmed by taking in so many people at once.  We expected service to be slower than eating in the buffet, but we were there for over an hour and found it to be just way too slow of a process.  It was nice having waiters serve everything to us at the table instead of fighting with the crowds at the buffet line, but I was famished by the time I finally got my meal at 8:45am.  On days like this, it might have been better to just go to the buffet where I can get the same exact food but significantly faster.

Today’s daily schedule included a flyer from the Future Cruise department offering up to $500 onboard credit for this cruise plus 2 free perks for the future cruise if we booked a new cruise today.  We weren’t thinking about booking another cruise, especially since we already booked our honeymoon cruise to Tahiti on Paul Gauguin for September 2017!  It sounded like a good deal though, so we went down to see what cruise itineraries were available for spring 2018.  We arrived at 9:20am and there was a super long line!  I guess we weren’t the only ones who wanted to take advantage of this promotion!!  There is an iPad mounted outside the office, so I scrolled through the itinerary options while J waited in line until it was our turn at 9:50am.  We found an amazing itinerary for a 14 night cruise on the Eclipse for March 2018 that goes to a few Southern Caribbean ports plus all of the ABC islands! Remember way back when we booked this current cruise and I had been already eyeing a cruise on the Carnival Breeze? Well that cruise went to Aruba and Curacao, so clearly I have been dying to get to the ABC islands for a long time!  There was no penalty for booking the cruise today and we could cancel or change our booking up until final payment is due at 75 days before the cruise, so we booked a balcony cabin and opted to apply our $250 onboard credit to this current cruise.  We could have opted to apply that to the future cruise, and that would have made our deposit refundable, but we chose to pay the $250 nonrefundable deposit and take the OBC for this cruise because we already planned to spend that much anyway. We were planning to upgrade to the premium beverage package and we had dinner reservations at Tuscan Grill, plus J wanted to take the mixology class, so with all those charges pending, we decided to make use of the $250 OBC now, not knowing if we would have a use for it on the 2018 cruise.

We spent about a half hour sorting out the details of the booking the new cruise, then we went back upstairs to spend some time reading on our balcony and drinking mimosas.  It was just so relaxing to sit out there and watch the clouds float over the ocean.

image

Today was St. Patrick’s Day, and we noticed decorations all over the ship to
celebrate the occasion.  They even had a special section of desserts at the buffet for lunch!

image

I forgot to take a photo of my lunch, so not sure what I ate but I know there’s no way I skipped a meal on a cruise ship! I think I might have made another visit to the pasta bar.  After lunch, we walked around the ship for a few minutes.  I loved this sign saying “Here Comes The Sun” on each of the decks near the glass elevators.

We ended up at the pool deck at the Slush bar where I upgraded to the premium beverage package.  I was on a mission to try every drink on the Slush menu, but the drinks cost more than was allowed on the classic package and they just weren’t as good when they were made as virgin drinks.  Iwan is the bartender at Slush, and he charged me $11.80 for each of the 8 days remaining on the cruise, and put a sticker on my seapass card to verify my upgrade.  After being on the ship for 4 days, I will admit it got annoying when every bartender tried to convince us to upgrade to the premium package.  J and I made a game out of it- every time someone asked us to upgrade, we took a sip of our drink!  We always planned to upgrade at some point, but wanted to hold out a few days to save some money and drink the less pricey drinks.

With that piece of business taken care of, we continued walking around the ship.  J was convinced that the coffee in the buffet was decaf because no matter how much he drank, he never felt the effects.  We went over to Cafe al Bacio so he could order something a little stronger, and we shared a slide of carrot cake (yumm!)

image

We ended up back on our balcony for a few hours until it was time for the Mixology class.  This is held every sea day at 4:30pm in the World Class Bar, and the cost is $35 per person.  I personally didn’t have much interest in participating in the class, but I wanted to keep J company so they let me just sit at the bar and watch for free.  As it turned out, I really enjoyed the class and learned a few things I didn’t know about making drinks.  Six people attended the class, plus me and another woman keeping her husband company but not participating in making the drinks.  One of the bartenders, Santos, taught the class, and he started with a little intro about the various types of drinks (every drink is NOT a cocktail!  There is also a swizzle, smash, mule, collins, etc.)

image

Santos taught us how to make 3 drinks, and each time he would demonstrate how to make a simple version of the drink, then he substituted a few ingredients for a jazzed up version of the drink and he brought 2 people at a time behind the bar to make it.  Everyone had their turn behind the bar to make each of the 3 drinks: a mojito, a Tom Collins, and a swizzle drink.  The class was supposed to take one hour, but actually took over an hour and a half! Maybe because there were 6 people participating and they only took 2 people behind the bar at a time?  I’m not sure if this was a larger turn out than normal, and maybe they should have divided us into 2 groups of 3 people to make it go faster?  One woman actually had to leave early or she would miss her 6pm dinner time! Regardless, everyone seemed to have a great time, and even though I didn’t get behind the bar to make the drinks, I still learned a lot and thought it was a good value (you get to drink the 3 drinks you make, by the way!).

Here are a few photos of J making his drinks…

image

Did you know the way to know how long to use the shaker is to listen to the ice?  When the sound of the ice changes, you are supposed to stop shaking because that means the ice is starting to melt and you don’t want your drink to get watered down!

The World Class Bar opens at 5pm, so people arrived for pre-dinner drinks while we were still taking the class.  Luca is the other bartender here, so he kept coming behind the bar to make their drinks while we were finishing up the class.  J and I loved the dry ice drinks and Luca let us hold the glass after the class was over.

At about 6:15pm, we finally made our way back to the cabin to quickly get ready for dinner, then we went downstairs to the martini bar for a pre-dinner drink.  This is our second year in a row on a cruise ship for St. Patrick’s Day, and we made it a tradition to get dressed up to celebrate.

image

We arrived at the hostess stand promptly at 7pm, and Gorica was happy to seat us with our regular wait staff at our window table for 2.

If you read my Carnival Valor review, you may remember that J brought green food dye to dye all our liquids green for St. Patty’s Day.  It was very entertaining to see the confusion on our waiters faces when they returned to our table to see lots of green drinks and soups when they knew that’s not what we were served!  From the minute we booked the Equinox cruise, J knew he had to bring green food dye again!

Tonight’s show was the second big production show, Destiny.  Once again, the aerialists and acrobats were fantastic!  The music selection was very similar to the show Life 2 nights ago, with lots of current pop and R&B songs.  Strangely enough, we didn’t know about half the songs- J actually thought Celebrity wrote original music for this show.  We enjoyed the show, but thought it was weird that it was so similar to the show 2 nights ago.  Usually each of the shows have different themes, but this show was very similar to Life, so if you do/don’t like one, you’ll probably feel the same way about the other.

image

The dancers were hooked up to bungee cords and ran vertically up the screens- a very cool effect!

image
image

After the show, we returned to the martini bar, where Yopi served me a candied apple martini on his wrist!

image

After another full and exciting sea day, we went back to the cabin to rest up for our next port of call!

Celebrity Equinox ~ Day 3

Tuesday, March 15 ~ Sea Day

Last night, we had to set our clocks back one hour to align with the local time in Mexico.  The good news was that we got an extra hour to sleep in on our first sea day… the bad news was that we woke up at 7am when our bodies thought it was an hour later. At least this view made waking up early a bit easier…

image

The MDR doesn’t start serving breakfast until 8am on sea days, so we went to the Oceanview Buffet instead.  I knew I wanted one of those yummy Belgian waffles, and the sticky bun was really good too.  My favorite treat was the smoked salmon-  I really liked that they served smoked salmon every day at the buffet, as I am used to only seeing it from room service or the MDR on Carnival cruises.

image

J loves his morning cup of coffee, so we went up to Cafe al Bacio so he could get something a little nicer than what is served at the buffet.  This became a frequent morning stop for us on both port days and sea days, and it was rarely crowded.

image

I don’t care for coffee (hence the reason I brought those cans of energy drinks in my carry-on bag yesterday!), but I did treat myself to the pastries or cakes in the display case.  These are better quality than what is offered at the buffet, and they are complimentary even if you don’t order a drink.

image

Bistro on 5 is located right across the hall, so we walked over to look at the menu.  It looked yummy, but we never made it here to eat.  Guess I’ll add that to my to-do list for my next Celebrity cruise!

image
image

We continued our tour of deck 5 up to the photo gallery to see our boarding photo from yesterday.  It was still so early that they weren’t open yet, but they had a machine where you can insert your sea pass card and it will pull up all of your photos.  It uses facial recognition software so it automatically finds all the photos taken of you, and you can view them, order prints, or even make a photobook on the machine!  This was way more convenient than searching through multiple walls of thousands of other photos to find ours (although I did like that they organized the printed photos by the deck of your cabin so it made it slightly easier to find ours once the photos were put on display later in the day).

image
image

The next stop on our tour of deck 5 brought us outside to check out the view.  Looks like the Constellation was sailing along with us towards Cozumel.

image

The Cruise Critic meet and greet was scheduled for 10:15am today at the Sky Lounge.  Luckily a few people mentioned it at the informal gathering yesterday as we never got an invitation sent to our cabin.  We mentioned that to someone at guest services this morning, and she insisted that it must have been in our cabin but we didn’t see it.  Not only did we know for sure that we did not get our invitation, we also never got yesterday’s daily schedule or our Captain’s Club coupons. Well by the time we got back to our cabin a few minutes later, all our embarkation day documents magically appeared on our bed.  We were fairly sure that Rhonda forgot to give us the papers yesterday and just placed them on our bed when she made up the cabin this morning.

image
image
image

Well over 100 people attended the Cruise Critic meet and greet.  The cruise director John briefly introduced himself, and then handed the floor over to the hotel director Jamie for a Q&A.  He answered lots of questions about the upcoming Edge class ships, TV stations available on board, and a few other topics.  Unfortunately, we had to duck out a few minutes early as we had a scheduling conflict today.  We felt badly about not staying until the end to chat more with our roll call members, but the Galley tour started at 10:45am and we did not want to be late.

I really appreciated that Celebrity offered this free Galley tour as it was a rare glimpse at the behind-the-scenes action.  We arrived at the MDR promptly at 10:45am and it was PACKED!  I wonder what time people arrived to be seated up front??  The hostess gave us each a mimosa and a sticker for group number 18, and escorted us to a table at the back of the room.

image
image

A few minutes later, the Executive Chef Josh Becker came out to introduce himself and all the other head chefs from around the ship (one for the buffet, one for the specialty restaurants, one for the pastries, etc).

image

They called 2 groups at a time to start their tours of the galley, while Josh answered our questions about food services onboard.  At first, I was annoyed about having to wait a long time for our galley tour to start, but I actually found this Q&A session to be extremely interesting and a valuable use of our time.

Our group was called in for the tour at around 11:15am, and our guide was another chef named Sam.  The tour was very brief, maybe 10-15 minutes max, but it was interesting to see the lay out and flow of the galley, and to watch as they prepared for today’s lunch and dinners.

image
image
image

We finished our tour by 11:30 and went up to deck 4 to check out the specialty restaurants on display.  Sam told us that if we booked a specialty restaurant for dinner tonight, we should mention his name for a 20% discount.  We knew we wanted to go to the Tuscan Grill for my birthday dinner next Monday, and luckily they were willing to honor that 20% discount for a future date. We requested a 7pm reservation, but they said they only had 6:30pm available so we agreed to that and finalized our booking.

All this talk about food was making us hungry, so we went back up to deck 14 for the day’s second round at the buffet.  I loved the antipasto salad with fresh artichokes, mushrooms, and sundried tomatoes. Only in the buffet on a cruise ship is it acceptable to pair that with macaroni salad and battered fish! haha Probably not the most logical combination of foods, but it hit the spot!

image

After lunch, we went outside to the pool area to check out the action (how did we manage to spend nearly all of our first 5 hours today indoors??). The pool was quite crowded, and nearly all the loungers were occupied. We noticed the Slush bar was open so we each asked for a virgin version of a drink to stay within our classic beverage package.

image

I loved that the Slush drinks were served in these plastic cups so we could take them in the pool or walk with them around the ship.

image
image

Insider tip:  While it would have been above the price maximum price allowance of our package to order the Slush drinks with alcohol, there was nothing to stop us from ordering a virgin drink, then walking around the corner and ordering a shot of rum at the pool bar, and dumping that in our slushie!

With such beautiful clear skies, we wanted to spend some time outdoors, but didn’t want to bother with the crowds near the pool.  We wandered upstairs to deck 15 and found that the lawn was nearly deserted! Having a live grass lawn on a cruise ship was so unique, and it was so beautiful to see the bright green grass contrast against the cobalt blue ocean and light turquoise skies.  We felt like we were having a picnic in a park, while drifting out to sea.

image

While we did want to be outdoors, we did not want to burn in the bright Caribbean sun, so we sat under the shade of the overhead canvas.  We spent a few hours laying out on a towel and enjoying some more drinks from the Sunset Bar.

image
image

At 3pm, we shifted over to the seating for the Hot Glass Show. This is another unique feature of the Equinox.  They have a contract with the Corning Museum of Glass where they have 3 gaffers on board who perform 2-hour shows and make 3-4 pieces each show.  It seems kind of random as an activity on a cruise ship, but I really enjoyed watching the process of making each project.  We only stayed for an hour because it was getting hot sitting so close to the ovens, but in that time they made one vase and one cup.  Unfortunately, we never made it back to observe any other shows during the cruise, but I wish we would have because it must be a different experience each time. They even had shows at night and I imagine the glass glowing brightly against the dark night sky would make for an unforgettable evening.

image
image
image
image
image

At 4pm, we left the show so we could spend about an hour on our balcony before getting ready for dinner.  Tonight was the first “Elegant Chic” night, and we treated it like a “formal” night on any other cruise.  I noticed many men wearing tuxedos and women in long formal dresses, but there were also many men in suits or just slacks, and women in cocktail dresses and sundresses.  Maybe it will just take a while for people to adjust to the revised dress codes, but at least for this sailing, it seemed as if people still get very dressed up.

image
image

We arrived at the Silhouette Dining Room at 7pm, and Gorica was able to seat us at a table next to a window again, but this time with a different wait staff.  We really liked our waiters this night- they took our orders and served our food at a good pace, and they were chatty and had a great personality.  We actually requested to sit in Arsapha and Fredys’s section for the remainder of the cruise, and Gorica was able to accommodate us.

The Equinox is such a beautiful ship- there were interesting wall hangings and decorations everywhere we went to make a nice background for a photo.

image

We posed for the ship’s formal photos at a few different backgrounds but we were ultimately unimpressed and did not purchase any of the photos.  I guess the other guests on the ship were more talented than the professional photographers on board!

Looked like there was some fun dancing in the Grand Foyer as we made our way forward to the theater.

image

Tonight’s show was Life, the first of 3 large production numbers featuring the singers, dancers, and aerialists.  The singers and dancers were good, but the truly phenomenal talent came from the aerialists.  I was extremely impressed every time they were on the stage, or should I say hovering above the stage!  All of the songs in this show were contemporary songs from the last 5 years or so (Just Give A Reason by Pink, I Lived by One Republic, Story Of My Life by One Direction, and Heartbeat Song by Kelly Clarkson, to name a few).  I personally really enjoyed the music selection, but that is because I like that style of music.  It seemed like Celebrity was gearing this show towards a younger, trendier demographic as compared to the traditional cruise line production shows, but that was fine by me! Another evidence of this was that they announced before the show that they encourage us to take non-flash photography and video of the shows to share on social media.  I guess they wanted to use us for free advertising of their fancy new production shows haha

image
image
image
image

The show ended at around 9:45pm, just in time for karaoke!  J loves karaoke and always wants to participate when we are on cruises.  Unfortunately, we felt this was a bit of a miss from Celebrity.  They host it at the Quasar night club, but the set up is terrible for karaoke.  The words are projected onto the far wall of the room, and the singer stands on the dance floor, but most of the people watching are on the other side of the room. The singer is forced to either have their back to the audience, or to stand sideways and keep looking left to see the lyrics and then right to perform for those in the room.  It was just extremely awkward, and I think that was part of the reason the karaoke was poorly attended.

image

J sang one song, then we left to get one last drink at the Gastrobar before going to sleep around 10:30pm to rest up for Cozumel.

Carnival Valor Cruise ~ Day 6

Tuesday, March 17 ~ St. Patrick’s Day at Sea

We woke up without an alarm at 8:30am… so much for sleeping in on
our one and only sea day!  We went to brunch at 9:15am and ran into our new cabin steward Ali in the hallway.  I was very impressed that he greeted us by name before I could even mention that we had just moved up here.

Brunch was in the aft Washington dining room, and we were seated immediately at a shared table for 6 people. Service was slow, but it was no different than on any other cruise and the meal took 1.5 hours total.  I had the bagel with lox and cream cheese, fried eggs over hard, and turkey bacon.  It was all very good and very filling!  I did miss getting to order a free cocktail from being a past guest… that bottle of water just isn’t as exciting haha

image
image

We got back to the cabin by 11am after brunch, and spent the next 3.5 hours enjoying our balcony.  Being a balcony virgin, I never really understood why people obsess over having a balcony and I always saw it as an unnecessary added expense when there is plenty of outdoor public space we could enjoy for free.  Now I finally understand what the excitement is all about.  It is so relaxing to sit outside in your own private space, drink a glass of wine, read a book, and listen to the waves pass by.  No loud party music.  No screaming children.  No cruise entertainment staff talking about hairy chests.  Just us.  Oh, and the people who work on the bridge!  As a warning to anyone looking to book cabin 7220, it is very close to the port side wing of the bridge.  We can see them, and they can see us!  In fact, when the all access ship tour got to the bridge, we waved at them and they waved back so we know they can see us. I guess that puts a slight limitation on the privacy offered by this cabin’s balcony, but it really wasn’t a big deal, and it was actually kind of fun to check out all the action up there!

image
image

No cruise is complete without sneaking a peak of the wake off the back of the ship!

image
image

Tea time was at 3pm and we were both looking forward to trying it as neither of us had gone before.  We arrived at the aft Washington dining room as they opened the doors, and we were seated at a shared table for 10 people.  Right away, they brought us each a mini kettle of hot water, and a waiter came around to let us pick out our flavor of tea.

image

Then the waiters came around with various desserts.  I noticed they also had cucumber sandwiches and something with smoked salmon on top, but somehow they never brought the savory items to our table.  In fact, there was one of the desserts that I really wanted to try, but the waiters kept skipping our table so eventually I had to ask someone to bring it over!  I’m really not sure what their system is, but it all seemed rather random.  My goal was to just try a taste of each item so I wouldn’t ruin my appetite for dinner.  Sadly, that idea was quickly forgotten as everything was so yummy and I ended up eating more than planned.

image
image
image

After tea time, we went back to the cabin to enjoy some more balcony time, then we got ready for formal night at dinner.

image

We got down to the lobby at 6:35pm and noticed a long line of people waiting to enter the dining room. We waited for 15 minutes to reach the front of the line, and they took our cabin number and gave us a pager so we would know when our table was ready.  Unsure of how long the wait would take, we decided to get a few drinks at the lobby bar.

image

We got seated at 7:30pm, but they were doing the show where the waiters sing and dance, so we had to wait 15 minutes before we could order our food.  After 35 minutes, we still had no food so we complained to a manager when he came over to check on us, and then our appetizers came out 5 minutes later.  Like magic, the service was much faster after we complained.  We planned to go to the 8:15pm show in the main theater but missed it because dinner took so long.  We left dinner at 9pm, 2.5 hrs after we originally got on line.   In theory, any time dining should be a great option, but unfortunately, in reality, the hour-long wait and the slow service meant we had to miss out on several things we planned to do around the ship at night.

We made the best of it and enjoyed our formal night dinner.  I had the stuffed white mushrooms, kale and beets carpaccio (a new appetizer I had never tried before), two orders of the lobster and shrimp entree, and the fresh fruit for dessert.  These photos all look very dark to me… I took all my food porn pictures both with and without the flash, but the ones with the flash totally washed out the food and looked waaaay too light, so I had to use the non-flash photos.  I’m sorry if they aren’t the best quality, but hopefully you get a good enough view!.

image
image
image
image

We didn’t have a ton of opportunities to acknowledge St. Patrick’s Day today, and I didn’t notice the corned beef and cabbage which was rumored to be on tonight’s dinner menu (perhaps because they didn’t want to alter the formal night dinner menu??), but J didn’t want to ignore the holiday. Despite the limited space in his 3-1-1 bag for TSA on the plane, he managed to squeeze in a tiny bottle of green food coloring! He brought it to dinner and used it to turn all of our liquids green.  Both of our cocktails were green (you can see them on the sides of this photo… people actually asked us what we ordered because they wanted green drinks too!!), our waters were green, even J’s soup was green!  Our waiters looked very confused when they walked passed our table because they knew they didn’t serve us green water or soup haha

image
image

After dinner, we went to the 10:15pm production show called Nightclub Express.  It was ok but would have been better if it had more songs that we knew.  The show featured a unique narrator… a giant talking sofa!  It reminded me of an after school special or something haha  A few times during the show, between singing and dancing numbers, the couch rolled out on stage to tell us about the next set of songs.  Very strange! We thought it was kind of odd that the dancers wore thongs for most of their costumes… that’s not very family friendly!

After the show, we went to see the piano bar. There were maybe 20 people in there so it wasn’t very lively.  We stayed for a few songs, then went up to Lido to grab a snack before bedtime.  I loved how pretty the aft pool looked at night…

image
image

There are very few options for food this late at night… sometimes the grill was open, but not every night.  The only other option was pizza, but it always had a looooong line.  It was nice that they make each pizza fresh when you order it, but it takes 20 minutes to cook each pizza, and that creates a long line of people waiting for their food.  Maybe it would work better if they continuously made pizzas at this late hour considering there was clearly a demand for it, but I guess it would get cold quickly since it’s such a thin crust.  Here was the pizza place menu:

Carnival Sunshine ~ Day 8: Sea Day

September 14 – Sea Day

It was lovely being able to sleep in and wake up naturally without an alarm… unfortunately, I was up at 8:30am anyway because my body was getting used to all those early wake up times. I ate a light breakfast on Lido deck, then went down to the lobby and sat on a couch by the window to write in my trip journal.

We met our friends at the comedy brunch at noon, and redeemed our coupons for a free drink from being a past guest.

Brunch took about an hour and a half, then we walked around the ship for a while. It was very windy outside and the temps were only in the 70s, so it was too cold to sit out on Lido deck. Instead, we sat at the tables near Blue Iguana because they were shaded from the wind. They had the chocolate buffet this day, but I was too full from brunch to enjoy it.

The Game of Love (formerly known as the Marriage Show haha) was scheduled for 3pm, so I was glad to have an excuse to be inside on this chilly day. They asked the same questions as on my last cruise, but it was still funny and entertaining. After that, we played 60’s trivia and “all about nothing” trivia, and we won a ship on a stick!

image

This ended a little after 5pm, so we quickly got changed and ready for the second formal night. It was fun that they had a different menu for this formal night (the menu with escragots and chateaubriand came later in the week), and there were so many great appetizer options that I ordered 3 of them!

After dinner, we went straight to the theater to wait in line for seats because we knew the line would be long. We were first in line downstairs and waited a half hour for them to open the doors. We were trampled by people when the doors finally opened, only to see that they opened the upstairs doors several minutes earlier and no good seats were left! We were rather annoyed to have wasted the half hour waiting in line for no reason, and we took seats on the sides of the theater with partially obstructed views from the columns. The theater was completely full by 8:10pm for the 8:30 show.

Tonight’s show was Studio VIP. It was a fun 70’s music disco-themed show with great dancing and costumes. They brought people up on stage from the audience to dance in several songs, so it was funny to watch and sing along. After that, I went straight to bed at 10pm because I had been coming down with a cold for the last two days and I wanted to rest up for Sicily.

Carnival Sunshine ~ Day 5: Sea Day

September 11 – Sea Day

It was nice to finally have a chance to sleep in and not set an alarm… unfortunately, my body missed the memo and I woke up at 8am (which was really like 7am since we changed the clocks last night). My effort to sleep in was an epic fail, but I wasn’t going to let that ruin my day! Mom and I had talked about going to brunch at noon, so I decided to head down to deck 5 to check out what the Taste Bar had to offer for breakfast. I was hoping they would have an omelet station so I could go there on future port days to avoid the crowds on Lido… no such luck! They only had pastries, french toast, eggs, bacon, hot and cold cereals, and coffee/juice.

image

After breakfast, I went up to the Serenity deck and was able to get a lounge chair right near the pool at 8:45am. It was getting crowded but since I was by myself, it was easy to find one lounger alone.

I will take this opportunity to talk about Chogs… I stayed up there for about 2 hours, and as time went on, all the chairs were taken and there were several people walking around looking for places to sit. Unfortunately for them, the Chogs were out to play today. There was a whole line of chairs next to where I was sitting and they had books and towels on them for nearly the entire time I was sitting there, but it wasn’t until the very end that anyone actually showed up to sit down (way longer than the advertised 40 minute limit to reserve chairs). I never saw any staff members walk by to monitor this.

image

At least there were also a good number of people legitimately using their chairs and enjoying their time out on deck.

image

I never bothered to look for a lounger in the main Lido section, but I snapped this photo on my way back to the cabin at 10:30 and there were tons of open seats. It probably helped that it was a bit cool and breezy this morning so maybe people just didn’t feel like laying out or going in the pool?

image

I went back to the cabin to get showered and ready for brunch, and we headed down to the aft MDR at around noon. My last Carnival cruise was on the Victory so we did not have the comedy brunch then and I was excited to try the new menu.

image

image

I ordered the fruit plate, french toast with frosted flakes crust, hash browns, and turkey bacon.

image
image

I was totally stuffed and I only ate half of what they served me! After reading so many reviews before the cruise, I was so curious about the cereal-encrusted french toast and I’m so glad I tried it because I really liked it! It was very sweet and filling though, just a warning haha I wasn’t really hungry for dessert, but I wanted to try the churros so I ordered them anyway. I thought they were way too sweet, and I don’t think I’ve ever felt that way about anything before haha They were small and crispy- not really what I expected.

image

Towards the end of brunch, the comedian came on to do his shtick. I had read a lot of negative reviews about this, so my expectations were very low. Surprisingly, the comedian was actually very funny! He talked for about 10 minutes and made several funny jokes. If it’s not your thing, you can easily avoid the comedians because they only come on at the top of each hour, so if you go to brunch at a quarter after the hour, you’ll miss them and probably be done eating before they come back at the next hour haha

We also got some bad news while we were eating brunch… The captain came on the overhead to announce that one of the passengers needed immediate medical attention, and we would be diverting our path to head towards shore where they would tender the passenger to an ambulance which would take him to a hospital. The rumor around the ship was that he had a heart attack, but due to HIPAA, we will never know for sure. Hopefully he is doing okay and got the medical attention he needed. When the captain made the original announcement, he said he would come back later to let us know if and how the detour would affect our arrival in Athens. About 3 hours later, he came back to announce that we had made good timing so far, and we did not have very far to go to reach Athens, so he did not anticipate any delays. Luckily, he was correct and we arrived in Athens as scheduled at 7am the next day! This was our only medical emergency during the 12-day cruise (or at least it was the only one we knew about!)

We had a very active roll call on Cruise Critic before leaving on our vacation, so we set up a few activities for this sea day. We planned a 2-hour open bar (including liquors and beers, with dry snacks also provided) for $20 per person. After that, we also had a regular meet and greet for a third hour in case people wanted to skip the drinking portion. During that hour, we did a gift exchange and we also exchanged money for any privately booked group excursions. I think there were about a third of the group who did the open bar, and then another third of the group came for the last hour when the open bar ended. The last third of the roll call never came to the meet and greet, so I guess they were just too busy having fun elsewhere on the ship! All of this was pre-arranged through Carnival, and they gave us the comedy club lounge for our private use all afternoon. They had 2 servers and one bartender, so there was quite a long wait for drinks, but they didn’t stop us from ordering two (or four!) drinks at a time haha They served the drinks in very small cups and didn’t put much alcohol in them, so I’m sure Carnival still managed to come out ahead on this deal… Here is my Kiss on the Lips:

image

I had a great time at the meet and greet and was so happy to finally put a face to all the names I had been communicating with for months prior to the cruise. We felt special that they put this sign outside the lounge for us…

image

After the meet and greet, we went back to the cabin to get changed for formal night.

image

I was still really full from brunch, but I wasn’t going to miss my one chance to eat lobster for dinner!

I was so beyond stuffed at this point that I didn’t eat dessert. Oh no! The horror!! I never thought I’d ever come to that point! haha

After dinner, we went to the show lounge at 7:45 and the doors were still closed.

image

They opened the doors at 8pm and nearly every seat was taken by 8:05pm! It was literally like a stampede of people running for seats… every man for himself! There really are not enough seats in the theater, and that is unfortunate as I know a lot of people look forward to seeing the shows each night but won’t be able to because the theater is too small.

Anyway, tonight’s show was Motor City with a Motown theme. It was great and a lot of fun to watch. Before the show started, they pulled a few people up on stage, but after that, no more photos were allowed.

image

When the show ended, the dancers took the party out into the lobby and continued with 4 or 5 extra songs.

image
image

Today was September 11th. It did feel a bit odd to be having so much fun and singing and dancing on such a somber day, but I really appreciated what the ship did to honor the day. While I was watching the dancers in the lobby, I looked up at the glass elevators and I found this hanging above me…

image

The flag was HUGE and was hanging from deck 10 so you could see it from several different floors. After the dancers finished in the lobby, we went upstairs to take a few more pictures.

Then we went back to the cabin to get ready for bed as we had an early wake up the next day in Athens.

Carnival Victory ~ Day 5: Day at Sea

December 11, 2012

Tuesday was the one and only sea day. I wanted to eat breakfast in the MDR since this was the only day we’d have the time to do that. Plus, I wanted to redeem my past guest drink voucher! Beth only eats cereal for breakfast, and she preferred to sleep in, so I went to the MDR alone at about 9am and was seated at a table of 10 people who all walked in around the same time. I also like eating breakfast in the MDR because it’s fun to see how many different waiters fuss over you- one for the water, one for the coffee, one for the danishes, one to actually take your food order, etc. I got the baked apple, french toast, and turkey bacon:

image
image

We ended up chatting at the table for an hour and a half! When we were done eating, I ordered my free cocktail, with the intentions of drinking it up on Lido deck (since 9am is a little too early to start drinking if you ask me! haha) I got The Cruiser, which had Malibu rum, vodka, peach schnapps, pineapple juice, orange juice, and cranberry juice. It sounded like a good morning drink, and it tasted delicious!

image

They served it in a glass, so I carefully carried it out of the dining room, up the elevator, and straight to one of the lido bars and asked the bartender to transfer it into a plastic cup so I could drink it on the deck. By then, it was about 10:45am, so I found Beth and we sat together in our lounge chairs. As I already mentioned, there was absolutely no trouble finding lounge chairs, even on the sea day. Beth had saved me a seat next to her, but that wasn’t really necessary as there were tons of empty chairs. As the day went on, I was worried about getting burned, so I pulled a lounge chair under the overhang from the deck above next to the stairs, behind where the band plays. There were about 20 other people who did the same thing, since there isn’t any other shade near the pools. It was a beautiful day with clear skies and a light wind.

image

I am not one to sit around and do nothing all day- I get bored way too easily, and despite my best efforts to read my book, I get distracted every time someone walks by because I like to people-watch. Perhaps the only downside to me of having just 1 sea day is that the ship has to cram all the typical sea day activities into one day, so there are a lot of scheduling conflicts! I enjoyed watching the ice carving demonstration, hairy chest contest, and paper airplane contest while on Lido deck. The only time the Lido deck looked crowded all week was during these contests:

image

At 1pm, I went down to the Atlantic dining room for the wine seminar. I had called guest services earlier in the day and was told it costs $10, which I thought was very reasonable for 5 glasses of wine. Well when I got there, only one other person showed up! The hostess said this would be the third week in a row when they had to cancel the wine seminar due to lack of interest. I think a lot of the problem is that 1pm is prime time to be up on Lido enjoying the activities on the sea day, plus a lot of people would think 1pm is a bit too early to drink all that wine. I suggested that they may have a better turn out if they moved the seminar to later in the afternoon. As a way to apologize, they offered us each a complimentary glass of wine, so I happily took my second free drink of the day back up to Lido and enjoyed my Chardonnay with some seafood stir fry from Chopstix.

image

Next up on my agenda was the Love and Marriage show at 3:15pm. By then, I had enough time outside so I didn’t mind going inside to the theater for a little break, and I was glad I went. The cruise director Hennie was very funny as the host, and I spent most of the next hour laughing. After the show, I went back to the cabin to get ready for formal night.

I was very impressed and surprised with how the guests onboard participated in formal night. I saw a handful of men wearing tuxedos, although most wore suits. And I saw many women wearing floor-length gowns, which really impressed me knowing how much luggage space that would require! A few people chose to stay casual, but overall, most of the guests were dressed up. Even the Puerto Rican teenagers were dressed up, wearing what looked like their fancy quincinera dresses! Here is a photo of Beth and I outside the comedy club:

Tonight’s dinner included the ever-popular lobster entree. I thought the lobster tasted good, but it was a bit tough in consistency, likely due to being overcooked. The tiger shrimp that came with it were surprisingly good though. I also ordered the prime rib, and I was very impressed that they actually cooked it to order (I love my meat rare!) The stuffed mushrooms were served in the escargot dishes, and they tasted pretty good.

After dinner, we went back to the cabin to pack up our beach bags for Barbados, and then I went to the first big production of the week- City Lights. I usually enjoy watching Broadway-style shows, but I wasn’t overly impressed with this show. I thought the costumes were somewhat inappropriate for a family-friendly show, considering the girls were wearing nothing but thongs to cover their behinds. The singing and dancing was okay, but not great, although I guess I should cut them a little slack considering how rocky the ship was haha

After that, I went to see the other comedian, named Mark Simmons, and he generally went for the dirty jokes and for the shock value. He made a lot of jokes about smoking pot, which I didn’t personally find to be funny but many others seemed to enjoy it. After the comedy show, I went back to the cabin to rest up for Barbados.

This was our towel “animal” tonight- We weren’t exactly sure what it was supposed to be… maybe an eskimo?

Celebrity Summit ~ Part 9: Day 7 at Sea

December 4, 2010

Friday 11/19: Sea Day

On the sea day, I really intended to sleep late, but of course woke up by 8:30am. I spent an hour or so packing so I wouldn’t have to waste time packing later in the day, and then I went to the big brunch in the MDR at 10am. Celebrity apparently did away with the midnight buffet and they replaced it with brunch. They set up the room with food stations at a few different tables, and used ice sculptures as the centerpieces. Before taking a plate to gather my food, I took some photos:

image
image
image

The staff talent show was scheduled at 10:45am, which was a little early as I felt rushed to finish my brunch, but it was worth going to. 5 or 6 staff members performed magic tricks, singing, comedy, and I can’t remember what else, and at the end they had all of the staff march down the aisles and go up on stage (including all the stewards and waiters too):

image

The weather was kind of crummy (cold, cloudy, and raining most of the day), so I found a lounge chair in the T-pool room and took a nap. Then I went to the art auction at 1:30 because I wanted to experience the whole thing. They gave out tons of free champagne, and had very reasonable starting prices for the art (although I did not bid on anything!). After that, I went to the pool deck to watch an ice carving demonstration, then I did some shopping on the ship to find the last of my holiday presents for my family. Then I went back to my room to change for dinner, finish packing and put my suitcase outside my room. I went to one last “These Guys” performance before dinner.

I was a little unimpressed with the dinner menu on the last night… maybe it’s just because I was so excited by all the options on previous nights, but I just didn’t think it was as good on the last night.

After an unusually long dinner, I made my way around the ship to say goodbye to my new friends.

Saturday 11/20: Disembarkation 😦

Sadly, the week had come to an end and it was time to go home. The buffet was supposed to close around 8:30, so I went to breakfast early (this was the only time the entire week when I had trouble finding a place to sit to eat! It was soooo crowded that I was tempted to just bring my food back to my cabin, but I eventually found a seat). Then I went back to my cabin and waited until 9:30am for my time to meet and wait for them to call my luggage tag number. Apparently they were a little delayed in clearing customs because they didn’t actually call my number until 45 minutes later. I got off the ship quickly and had no trouble finding my suitcase lined up under the correct number in the warehouse. Then I got on the end of an extremely long line and waited over a half hour to go through customs at the port. Once I got outside, I found some people to share a taxi with to the airport. I knew it should cost us $19 flat rate, and not per person, but our taxi driver tried to rip us off. We were firm that we would be making one stop at the airport and would only pay the $19 (plus $1 per bag) and when we finally got to the airport we basically handed her what we wanted to pay and walked away. Be very careful with these taxi drivers because they really try to get the most money they can out of you, hoping you don’t know about the zoning prices for fares. I had about a 2 minute wait for the agriculture scanners, and a 10 minute wait to check my bags with JetBlue, and then I was off to sit in the terminal for 3.5 hours until my flight. Luckily, I ran into lots of new friends while I was waiting (we were the only ship disembarking in San Juan that day, so it was not surprising that I saw many familiar faces at the airport!) I only took one photo that last day, so I think it is fitting to end my review with a beautiful view of a full moon over the sunset out the plane window on my flight home:

The End!
