Saturday, March 16, 2019 ~ Fun Day at Sea

What is it about cruises that seem to make time move faster than regular days at home?  Somehow it was already the last full day of our cruise and we were sailing back towards New Orleans.  This is usually the time in my vacation when all of the action-packed port days and physically exerting excursions catch up with me, and all I want to do is plant my butt on a lounge chair, write in my trip journal, and eat (after all, I won’t have the excuse that “vacation calories don’t count” after the vacation is over!).  Of course, that doesn’t mean that I’ll suddenly adjust to sleeping late, so I was wake around 7am.  I quietly got dressed and tip-toed out of the cabin so I wouldn’t wake DH, and I found these fliers in our mailbox.  The first was about the debarkation information, but it was a general form for all passengers on board.  We were supposed to get a different form specific to FTTF but it wasn’t delivered until later this afternoon.

My first stop today was up to the Serenity Deck to stake out my claim on a lounge chair.  It was around 7:40am by the time I got up there, but it was almost completely deserted and I had my pick of wherever I wanted to sit.

It was a little cloudy this morning, and also a little chilly, but the water was pretty smooth.

No need to worry about being a chair hog at this early hour, so I dropped off my tote bag on one of the clamshells, then headed down towards the Lido buffet to get a quick breakfast.  On my way down, I caught the end of a beautiful sunrise!

Blue Iguana had just opened so I could have gotten a breakfast burrito, but I decided to change it up and see what other options were available.

In the end, I sampled a little bit of everything in the carbs department…

Unfortunately, most of these items were a let down.  They were either stale, soggy, or a combination of both!  The round cinnamon pastry was the best of the bunch (but I already knew it was something I liked because I tried it earlier in the cruise too).  I will also say that the hard boiled egg was surprisingly good… it was still so hot that I was burning my fingertips as I tried to peel it (that is NOT a complaint, by the way!), but the shell peeled off easily in one big piece, and the yolk came out as one solid ball.  I hate when the yolk crumbles and it’s hard to remove it, but the crew member in charge of boiling eggs has mastered the skill and I was pleasantly surprised.

I still had a few minutes before I needed to get back to my clamshell to be within the 40 minute limit, so I walked around taking some more photos of the ship.  It was now a little after 8am, and there were still plenty of lounge chairs available at the aft pool.

The clouds broke up and it was turning into a beautiful morning at sea

hmm, or maybe not… lots of clouds out in the other direction!

The lounge chairs around the main Lido pool were filling in, but there were still plenty available at 8:10am.

Back up on Serenity Deck, I set up camp on one of the half-clam shells and spent about an hour jotting down notes in my trip journal.  In that time, maybe 2 or 3 other couples came by and sat for a bit, but it was almost completely empty for most of the time.

At around 9am, I remembered that we could pick up luggage tags in the Ocean Plaza.  Yesterday, I had stopped by at Guest Services to ask how the luggage tags were distributed for FTTF and they told me that we would get zone 2 tags.  Based on the information on the debarkation flyer, that meant we would be called to leave the ship around 8:30am.  DH and I had a few things planned for tomorrow, but we didn’t really need to be the first ones off the ship, and 8:30am was a bit too early for us.  I was originally planning to just let our luggage sit in the collection room with the zone 2 tags, and we’d get it when we got there, but then it occurred to me that I could also go get a higher zone number.  When I got downstairs, there were about 20 people on line ahead of me to pick up luggage tags, but the line moved fast and I had my pick of nearly any zone I wanted when I reached the front of the line (I think the zone 5 tags were already gone, but there were still tons of tags for all the other zones.)

I was getting a little hungry again since I didn’t eat much for breakfast, so after I took my luggage tags, I went back to the pizza place for a Quattro Formaggi pizza.  Yes, it was 9:20am, but people eat cold pizza for breakfast all the time, so why can’t I eat hot pizza?!  As I expected, there wasn’t anyone else on line when I arrived, and they didn’t have any pizzas pre-made and sitting there waiting to be taken, so they needed to make one fresh for me.  The guy said it would take about 5 minutes.  This was the photo I showed on the first sea day, but I’ll show it here again too since this was actually when I took it…

I took my pizza to-go and went back upstairs to Serenity Deck.  When I got there, DH was sitting on one of the bigger clamshells and he had moved my bags so we wouldn’t hog 2 spots.  By now, it was getting very windy and quite a bit colder, so the clamshell was helpful to block some of the wind, but we also needed to get towels to use as blankets.  While DH was sitting there, he noticed the crew member walked around and put stickers on the chairs around him that had belongings on them.

Sure enough, at 9:55am, that same crew member came back and gathered up the belongings from our neighboring clamshell.  We thanked him for taking care of that because even though it was not crowded due to the cold and the wind, the rules still remain that you can only reserve a chair for 40 minutes and people need to be more respectful of that.  On other cruise lines, the staff is reluctant to enforce policies like that, so it was great to see that Carnival actually enforced their policies.

I stayed up there until around 11am when I just couldn’t tolerate the wind anymore.  By now, I assumed Jennifer would have finished cleaning our cabin, so I left DH reading his book in the clamshell and I went back downstairs to start the grueling task of packing.  On the bright side, this was only a 7-day cruise, so we didn’t have nearly as many things to pack up as we did on our last few cruises, but it still has to get done and it still eats away at time I should be out enjoying the ship.  When I got back to the cabin, this little guy was hanging around, waiting to greet us…

I took him down and added him to our windowsill collection…

I spent about an hour putting a big dent in the packing process, then decided to take a break and find something to eat.  I had been craving another lunch at Pasta Bella, so I went up there at around 12:15pm and OMG!  It was crazy crowded!  The hostess said it would take about 40 minutes to get my dish, and I immediately wished that I had this idea 30 minutes ago so I could have been there right when they opened at noon, and not now at the tail end of the initial rush.  Oh well, I had my trip journal with me so I found a table, filled out my request paper, and passed the time by writing in my journal.  Exactly 40 minutes later, a waiter came over with my pasta bowl, and it was totally worth the wait!

By the time I finished, it was a few minutes after 1pm, so I took a little walk around the ship to see what else was happening.  It looked like the Hairy Chest Contest was in full swing at the Lido pool.  I also didn’t see any vacant lounge chairs, so I guess you need to claim your spot before lunch if you want to spend time out here.

I went back upstairs to Serenity to find DH, and we went back downstairs to the cabin so he could pack up some of his stuff.  At around 2pm, I remembered that I wanted to try the Mongolian Wok one last time since I only had it once on embarkation day.  Yes, I fully acknowledge that I ate something every hour or two throughout the day, but I tried to keep the portions small to maximize how many venues I got to experience around the ship.  It would be a shame to miss out on anything! Haha

I got to the line at Mongolian Wok at 2:10pm, knowing that there would be a line, but wanting to make sure I was served prior to their 2:30pm closing time.  The line reached back to the doors from the elevator bank.  While I waited on line, DH went around to the other line and came back to say that it was equally long.  I wish they had a better system for the Mongolian Wok because this line moved incredibly slowly.  Part of the problem was that nearly everyone on line ahead of me was making two bowls (one for the person in line, and one for someone else who was not physically standing there).  This meant the line was twice as long as it seemed, and it took 45 minutes from when I got on line to when my food was ready.  There is only one guy cooking on each side, and he cooks 3 woks at a time, so it is just a very slow process.  At 2:30pm, one of the crew members stood at the end of the line with a sign saying “buffet closed”, so as long as you are in the line by 2:30pm, you will be served, even if you don’t get your food until long after the printed closing time.

It was fun that they had calamari as the seafood option today instead of shrimp, so I asked for that and the guy was extremely generous when he scooped it out of the bowl.  I have a feeling not many people ordered it and since I was one of the last bowls he was cooking, he probably wanted to use it up.  I also ordered my dish to be cooked with soy sauce instead of one of the 3 sauces on the menu, and that was no problem at all for him.

Although I didn’t love waiting in line this long, I must admit the food is always really yummy!

Unfortunately, this whole process took way longer than I was anticipating and I had to miss the Q and A session with Gary.  I usually like going to those sessions because I like hearing about what it’s like to work on a cruise ship, and the cruise directors are usually entertaining and funny, but it just wasn’t meant to be today.  The next event I wanted to attend was trivia about the TV show Friends in the Ocean Plaza at 3:15pm.  DH isn’t a big fan of Friends, but I have seen every episode multiple times and wanted to put my knowledge to the test.  The questions were very fair, and definitely the kinds of things you’d only know if you watch the show, so that meant I was completely on my own as DH had no clue about any of the questions haha  In the end, I got 16 out of 20 correct, and I was kicking myself over the ones I missed because I knew them immediately when they announced the answers.  There ended up being a tie with 2 people both getting all 20 questions correct, so they brought both those people up to the front of the room for a tie breaker.  They had to take turns saying the name of a TV show (past or current were both okay), and the first person to not think of a reply or to repeat something already said lost.  I think one of them was nervous standing up there because he only answered 2 TV show names and the other woman was announced the winner.  DH and I could go back and forth for an hour listing TV shows, so I have a feeling that guy probably just got nervous in the moment.

Trivia ended at 3:45pm, just in time for us to walk down the hall to the Caliente Night Club for karaoke at 4pm.  It seemed a little weird that they had karaoke in the middle of the afternoon, but there were no other activities that interested us at this time, and DH had yet to sing for karaoke, so this was our chance.  It was already pretty crowded by the time we arrived (not sure if all these people were camped out here all afternoon in anticipation of karaoke, or if they were just ahead of us in the crowd leaving Ocean Plaza after trivia?), but we managed to find 2 seats together towards the back of the room.

When we first arrived, it was 3:50pm and DH approached the host to make his song request.  The host said he wasn’t ready yet and he would make an announcement when it was time to come back up.  DH was sitting at the edge of his seat, ready to go as soon as that announcement was made, so he ended up being the third person in line.  That was a really good thing because there were about 50 people who ran up to request songs, and the host had to cut off any requests after that because we’d be here all night at that rate!

DH rocked out on air guitar while singing Sweet Child o’ Mine by Guns N’ Roses

Three or four songs later, they had a technical malfunction and the host had to call in help from a technician.  It took them about 20 minutes to get things up and running again, and lots of people gave up and left at that time, so DH was really happy he got to sing before the machine broke.  They did eventually fix it and we stuck around to listen to a few more people perform.  Karaoke is always a fun time, and even if the person singing doesn’t necessarily have the greatest voice, it’s still fun to cheer them on.

While we were watching karaoke, I needed to check in for our flight home tomorrow.  Luckily, the signal in the Caliente Nightclub was really good, so I was able to type in my information into the Southwest app, and DH’s information into the Southwest website, and I was ready to go the second it hit 24 hours prior to our flight.  I ended up getting B-17 for me and B-30 for DH, so that was impressive considering those are the kinds of boarding numbers we get when we check in right on time at home too.

We stayed at karaoke until 5:30pm, but then we knew it was time to go because we wanted to get changed before dinner and we still had to finish packing.  The debarkation flyer said our luggage had to be placed outside of our cabin before 11pm, so we wanted to do it before dinner.  Otherwise we would need to interrupt our evening activities to return to the cabin and finish packing, and that’s not how we wanted to spend our last night on the ship!  It wasn’t too hard to finish packing our big bag because we maxed out our weight limit before the bag was full haha  That meant that everything else had to fit into our rolling carry on bags or backpacks, and if not, we could always rearrange as needed when we got to the airport tomorrow.  It’s always a sad moment when you put your suitcase in the hallway…

At 6pm, we headed upstairs for our last dinner in the MDR.  All week, I had been searching the menus for escargot but it had yet to make an appearance.  I hoped it would show up tonight on the last night of the cruise, but it did not.  That was a bit disappointing to me because I love ordering escargots on cruises and I know it is offered on other Carnival cruises, but for some reason, it was not offered on our cruise.  Maybe it has something to do with New Orleans??

DH and I both ordered the baked onion soup appetizer.  It was almost comical to compare this to the one DH had in the steakhouse on Sunday!  You know the piece of bread/crouton they put in the bowl?  It was literally a slice of sandwich bread, with the crust still on it!  They folded the bread in half, then in half again, and crammed it into the little bowl before adding broth and cheese.  Neither of us had any onions at all!  We just had to laugh…

We ordered the BBQ Chicken flat bread to share, but we both loved it so much that we probably should have gotten our own!

I ordered the Penne, Shrimp, and Bacon dish for my entrée.  DH had the Prime Rib, and I probably should have gone for that too just because it’s a fancier dish and we rarely eat steak at home, but I wasn’t in the mood for meat.  DH said his Prime Rib was good, as was my pasta dish.

Dessert Menu… There were no cake options tonight aside from the Baked Alaska (which is ice cream, not really cake), so I wonder if today is the pastry chef’s day off?

I’m not a huge fan of Baked Alaska because I try to avoid ice cream (stupid lactose intolerance!), so I ordered the Carnival Melting Chocolate Cake with no ice cream (as I always order it, much to my waiter’s confusion haha)  When my dessert arrived, it had the ice cream included, which isn’t a big deal because it is self-contained in its own ramekin, and DH doesn’t mind taking one for the team and eating it on his own so we don’t waste the food.

Just as I was about to start eating, our wait staff came over with a cake and to sing Happy Birthday to me!  My birthday is not until the week after the cruise, but that was nice of them to acknowledge it on the last night.  I just wish I had known because I did not need two heavy chocolate desserts at the same time and I wouldn’t have ordered the WCMC!  The birthday cake was more of a fudgey mouse than a cake, and it was really good, so we ended up taking it back to the cabin to snack on later tonight.  Luckily this plate was small enough to fit in our fridge!

After a quick stop at the cabin to drop off the cake, we went up to the Encore! Theatre for the Lip Sync Battle main event.  Apparently they had multiple lip sync competitions that lead up to this event throughout the week, but I have no idea when or where those occurred because I never saw it! Haha  We didn’t spent much time out by the Lido pool, so I have a hunch they did some events out there.  This was the only show in the theatre tonight and it was at 7:30pm, so it’s a good thing we had a speedy wait staff in the MDR or we would have missed it.

The show is modeled after the Lip Sync Battle TV show on Paramount Network.  They had two contestants and each performed two lip sync songs, the second of which included dancers from the production shows.  The contestants get to dress up in crazy costumes and they really got into it.

Here is Gary explaining the rules, while one of the guys from the entertainment team displays the winner’s belt.

The two contestants were called on stage so Gary could introduce them

I forgot to write down which songs they sang, but I have a feeling they are heavily coached by the singers and dancers on board because the songs were all big crowd pleasers that everyone was familiar with.  They had a little intermission after each contestant finished their first song, and they invited up children from the kids club to sing and dance on stage.  I think they had practiced with each age group and this was like their final recital.  After that, the lip sync contestants returned for round two, and this was when they went all out.

The first lady did a good job of getting the crowd pumped up, and she really owned the stage.

The second contestant “sang” Tina Turner’s Proud Mary.  This guy was incredible!  He’s a recently retried police officer, but wow did he have some great dance moves!  The whole crowd was laughing and cheering him on, and you could tell he was having such a fun time up on stage.

And then, this happened:

The dancers helped him strip off the black shirt and pants, and they put on that wig, and bam!  Nothing like a macho guy dressed in drag to get the crowd on their feet!

There was no question as to who should win this battle, but Gary still gave us a few minutes to think it over while he performed a lip sync routine with the dancers to a medley of 80’s songs.

I think the assistant from the entertainment team also did a medley, maybe to 70’s songs?  I don’t remember and I forgot to take a photo to jog my memory.  Anyway, after that, they brought the two main contestants back on stage for the final judging.  By a deafening round of applause, the guy was announced the winner!

The lady did try hard and she was a good sport about it, but that guy just won everyone over.  They awarded him to winner’s belt…

The show lasted about 45 minutes, but when it ended, there was a big gap in the activities schedule.  Kudos Strings was performing in the lobby, but they were just about to finish their set, and the only other two options were country music with Machine Company or country music with the BlackJack Duo.  Hey, wait a minute!  I know what we can do now… I need to redeem my past guest coupon for a free cocktail!  Carnival thought I would forget to use it, but I’ll prove them wrong!  The coupon says it is good for a drink up to $9 in value, but I must say that is quite challenging because nearly every cocktail on the ship costs more than that, even if it’s just by a few cents.  I stopped by the piano bar because it was empty since Zack didn’t start his set yet, and that meant the bartenders were sitting around just waiting for someone to order a drink.  I asked the bartender if I could use the coupon towards a drink that costs more than $9 and I would just pay the difference, and he said that was fine.  I looked through the menu and decided to order the Music, Sweet Music, with Bacardi Rum, Malibu Coconut Rum, Disaronno Amaretto, pineapple juice and orange juice.

When the bartender handed me the bill, it came out to zero dollars.  I am not sure if he did something special to make that happen, or if the coupon really does work on more expensive drinks, but either way, I was happy.  I would have paid the 50 cents (plus tip) difference, but I guess that was not necessary.

Just something to keep in mind for people sailing on cruises out of New Orleans… Once you re-enter the Mississippi River, they do start charging tax again.  I asked about that at guest services and they told me that I would need to pay tax on this drink if I ordered it after we re-entered US water space, and he estimated that to be around 10pm tonight.  I made sure to get my drink much earlier than that at about 8:30pm, just to be safe, but that means these “free” drink coupons for New Orleans-based cruises are extremely limited on the hours when the drink really will be free!

Cocktail in hand, we went over to The Song lounge to listen to BlackJack Duo.  Neither of us really listens to country music, but there was nothing else to do at this time and we wanted to stay close to the Burgundy Lounge for the 9:30pm comedy show, so since this was right next door, it just made sense.  The duo were pretty good, and there were two or three couples dancing on the small dance floor, so it made for an entertaining way to pass the time, even if we didn’t know any of the songs!

At 9:15pm, we went next door to get seats for the comedy show.  Tonight’s adult show was with the forth comedian on our sailing, Caroline Picard.  She is from the south, so I think she is a good fit for this cruise ship.  She did a whole set about her experiences traveling the country as a comedian, and she had the whole room laughing.  I especially enjoyed the part about her time in a blizzard in Michigan when all of the locals were unphased and came out to see her show despite the weather.

When that ended, we popped back into the piano bar for a few last songs with Zack.  It wasn’t very crowded in there tonight, so maybe people were back in their cabins packing their luggage and going to sleep early?

We were both getting hungry again around 11pm, so we went upstairs to the deli for a late night snack.  I ordered the meatball sandwich again, and it was just as good as when I had it for lunch yesterday!

We sat at a table by the windows, and it was so weird to see lights outside!  We must have already entered the Mississippi River so we were seeing lights from the little towns and buildings along the shore, but that was so rare as I was used to seeing nothing but darkness on that last night of the cruise when returning to ports in Florida.  On our way back to the cabin, we noticed that the casino was still open and there were lots of people taking advantage of it being legal to gamble on the Mississippi River.  We got back to the cabin around 11:30pm and called it a night, knowing that the debarkation announcements would start bright an early tomorrow morning and we wanted to get a good night’s sleep before that!

Monday, March 11, 2019 ~ Fun Day at Sea

Today’s Fun Times

After the first three days of our vacation required setting our alarms for annoyingly early hours, preceded by hectic work weeks for both of us, today’s schedule for a day at sea was a welcome treat.  You would think I would take advantage of having no where to be and no need to set an alarm clock by getting to sleep in, right?  Well of course that didn’t happen and I was wide awake by 7am.  I tried falling back asleep, but by 7:20, I realized that was unlikely to happen and I gave up.  I peaked outside and it looked like a beautiful sunny day, so I may as well get dressed and get this day started.

I took this opportunity to walk around and take photos of the public spaces on the ship.  Most people were still in their cabins, so this was a good chance to get some photos without anyone in them.

Deck 1 hallway

I liked the art they used to decorate the walls on the passenger decks.  It had a mid-century vibe and subdued color scheme which is rare to see on Carnival’s older ships.

The photo above is in the mid-ship elevator bank on deck 1.  All the other decks have the glass elevators in that spot, but those elevators don’t go all the way down to deck 1.

Mid-ship elevators

The only time I tolerated walking through the casino was in the early morning hours.  Maybe they need to upgrade the ventilation system or something, but once the day got started, it was way too smokey in there and I tried to avoid it if possible.  Luckily, you can cut across the ship right below the casino by using deck 4, and then use the mid-ship elevator stairs to get back up to deck 5 again.

The next few photos are all in the Encore! Main Lounge where they did all of the production shows

Standing at the top of Deck 5.  You can access the balcony level from deck 4 and deck 5.

The seats in the front row of the center of the balcony level were almost always left empty because their view is blocked by the control booth.  We sat in the front row, but one section over to the left of here for an unobstructed view of the stage

Information about the internet packages… They charge $8 per day for the social media plan if you wait until you are on the ship to purchase it.  That is double what I paid!

Information about the Carnival Hub app

They had several of these kiosks around the ship so you could access your onboard account without waiting on line at guest services

The photo gallery before they set up all the photos, and a trash bin for rejected photos

Heading all the way aft on Deck 5, we get to the Burgundy Lounge which is used for the comedy shows.  Not pictured is the bar towards the left side, and an additional large seating area on the right side

The Song lounge for smaller live music acts and karaoke

The Piano Bar.  We could almost always find a seat up at the bar, and if not, then there was seating available at the tables.

Bonsai Sushi… this was located in the hallway between the entertainment venues aft on deck 5 and Ocean’s Plaza in the midship area.  There was no barrier to keep the people eating separated from the walkway, so I imagine that would make for a hectic dining experience

Crimson Restaurant, midship MDR.  It was really nice that they kept the doors open to this dining room all day long so you could get from the midship elevators up to the atrium, theater, guest services, and the forward elevators.  The galley is just aft of here so you could not go in that direction without going up to Deck 5 or down to Deck 2, but at least you could go forward at any time of day.

There are still a few lounge chairs available at 8:30am at the Lido pool on Sea Day #1

Nothing but sun, sky, and ocean

Beautiful views of the wake from the aft pool

Lots of seats available on Serenity Deck at 8:50am

My tour of the ship ended at the Lido Buffet as I was getting hungry and needed a little snack before our real breakfast at the dining room.

Banana bread, mini cinnamon rolls (these were what I picked as my snack and they were really good!), and apple danishes

Croissants and apple panettone

Sliced cheeses and deli meats

Bagels, waffles, bread, and biscuits

Breakfast meats and potatoes

Last night before falling asleep, DH and I made a deal.  I knew it was highly likely that I would wake up long before he was ready to get out of bed.  He is not the biggest fan of early wake up calls while on vacation, but he’s a good sport and goes along with it on port days.  I promised him before going on the cruise that I would let him sleep in on the morning of the 2 sea days as well as Costa Maya day since we didn’t arrive there until noon.  Last night, DH said I should go explore the ship if I woke up early, and I could come back to wake him at 9:15am so we could go for brunch.  As expected, DH was still in bed when I returned at 9:20am, but he was awake and ready to start his day.  While he got ready, I read over this letter that was left in our mailbox.

I knew that FTTF would get us priority access to the tenders in Belize, but I was very surprised that we would also have priority debarkation in Costa Maya tomorrow.  There was likely to be a big rush of people all trying to get off the ship ASAP when we docked at noon, and we needed to get to our private tour by 12:45pm, so this priority access was much appreciated to take off some of the stress.

Sea Day Brunch was held in the aft dining room from 8:30am until 1pm.  Carnival started rolling out a new brunch menu on some of the ships, but the Dream still had the old menus on our sailing.

I was tempted to get the French toast, but instead opted for a bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon, and 2 fried eggs.

DH ordered the huevos rancheros (and the flamin’ tomatoes soup, but I forgot to take a photo of that… it looked like a bowl of marinara sauce, and that’s basically what it tasted like too!)

After brunch, we went back to the cabin to get a DH’s book and my trip journal, and we were greeted by this cute little towel animal.  It took me a few days to get used to seeing the towel animal in the morning instead of with evening turn down service like they used to do, but I still always appreciate the friendly reminder that I’m cruising with Carnival!  (Celebrity and Paul Gauguin don’t do towel animals and I missed them on those cruises!  To me, towel animals are one of the best cruising traditions.)

I asked Jennifer if we could keep our towel animals through the whole week of the cruise so I could make a little collection on our window sill.  Today, our little guy looks a little lonely, but he will soon be joined by lots of towel animal friends!

We made our way back upstairs to the Lido Waves Pool and it was way more crowded now than when I was here 3 hours ago!  They were doing the ice carving demonstration in the middle of the deck space, so lots of people were crowded around to get a good view.

As much as I love beautiful sunny days, I try to stay in the shade as much as possible to avoid getting a sunburn.  On port days, the sun can be unavoidable depending on what excursions we have planned, so I try to stay in the shade on sea days as I can usually find a place to sit  that is close by the “action” but also out of the sun.  One of the things I really liked about the set up of the Lido pool area on the Dream was that it was 3 decks high from deck 10 to 12, leaving lots of spots in the shade under the deck above if we stayed on decks 10 or 11.  Deck 10 was usually very busy between the pool, the bars, and the many food venues, so we spent a lot of time on deck 11.  That gave us a great view over the action below us, but we could still hide out in the shade from deck 12 above us.

I just loved the different shades of blue we saw throughout the cruise

Looking straight down, we could see lots of people using the lounger chairs on deck 5.

I just noticed the reflection of the lifeboats on the windows below us… that’s a fun effect!

We spent about an hour out there, with DH reading his book and me jotting down notes in my trip journal.  At 12:30pm, we decided to go to Pasta Bella for lunch.  Pasta Bella is located upstairs in the Lido Buffet on deck 11.  You need to check in with the hostess and she will give you a paper with the menu to check off what you want in your dish, and a stand with a number on it so you can pick your own table and the waiter will know where you are sitting when your food is ready.  I hoped that eating here on the first sea day would mean that it was less crowded because people hadn’t found it yet, but I was definitely wrong!  It was very busy and the hostess told us it would take about 30 minutes for our food to be ready.  We each filled out a sheet, put it in the box at the back of the room, and took a seat to wait for our lunch.

While we were waiting, a waiter dropped off some garlic bread.  It was a nice flaky consistency, almost like a focaccia, and had the perfect ratio of garlic and butter. It was tempting to ask for a second serving but we held out to wait for our pasta.

The waiter delivered our food almost exactly 30 minutes after we ordered, so it was impressive how accurate the hostess’s prediction was!  The pasta was hot and tasty, but I wish they put in more of the toppings (I only had 3 shrimp and 2 pieces of chicken).  No worries though, that just meant I would be ready for my next feeding a little sooner!

Our roll call on Cruise Critic was not very active for this cruise.  I think there were only 4 pages in the thread by the time we sailed.  This was my first cruise when there was a group on that other social media site (pretty sure it is against the rules here for me to mention the site by name… I’ll just call it “Thumbs Up”).  The Thumbs Up group had over 400 members and it was very active, especially in the last few weeks leading up to the cruise, with people posting daily countdowns and asking questions about excursions.  Someone organized an informal meet and greet in the Atrium Bar for 1pm today, so DH and I went down there to check it out after lunch.  We sat at the bar until 1:10pm and couldn’t figure out if anyone else was there for the meet and greet.  It’s hard to meet in a public space for something like this when you don’t know what everyone else looks like, and there can be people there who are not part of your group.  On my previous cruises, we have always worn plastic beaded necklaces to these kinds of events so we can all find each other, but no one suggested that for today.  Maybe this just wasn’t meant to be, so we left because we wanted to get seats in Ocean Plaza for the One Hit Wonders Name That Tune event at 1:30pm.

Somewhere during our walk through the ship, I saw this piece of art… Not sure if you can really call this art?  It kind of reminded me of the painting with dogs playing poker haha  It made me smile, so I guess that’s all that matters!

Right near Ocean Plaza, they have a screen with this map of our location.  I think they also had it on one of the stations for the TVs in the cabin.  We’re about halfway to Costa Maya!

We arrived at the Ocean Plaza around 1:25pm for the 1:30 trivia game, and it was already really crowded.  We found two open seats off to the side, but had we arrived a few minutes later, we would have needed to stand through the game.

The theme for this trivia was 80’s and 90’s one hit wonders, and we had to name the song title and artist for each of the 20 songs they played.  It was worth one point each for a total of 40 points, and we did respectably well, earning 31 points.  We knew the titles for all but one of the songs, but it was tricky trying to remember the artists (after all, they are one hit wonders!).  Even though we didn’t win the coveted gold plastic ship on a stick, we had a lot of fun playing as name that tune is our favorite type of trivia.  We played it nearly every day on our 14-night Celebrity cruise last year, but on the Dream, the timing often conflicted with our plans in port.  Our only other chance to play was on the last sea day, but the theme that day was Country music so we had zero chance of knowing any of those songs and opted to skip it.

In our quest to avoid the sun, we went out to the lounge chairs on the port side of deck 5, since the ship was sailing south and it was now into the afternoon so the port side faced east and would be completely in the shade.  I think this is one of the reasons we do better not having a balcony on cruises.  It gives us the flexibility to seek out the side of the ship that has shade at that moment, instead of feeling obligated to make use of our balcony even if it happens to be in direct sunlight at that moment.  Don’t get me wrong, we love having a balcony, but this one factor did help ease the pain of not having it on this cruise.

After a little while, I started to get hungry.  I didn’t want to eat too much and spoil my appetite for dinner… after all, tonight was lobster night in the MDR!  The pizzas on Carnival are thin crust, so they aren’t that filling, and I thought a slice or two of pizza would make the perfect snack.  I left DH to hold our lounge chairs and I made my way up to deck 10 Aft.  I must have had really good timing because not only was there no line at all, but there were 3 slices of the Quattro Formaggi pizza sitting behind the counter.  I really only wanted one or two slices, but when I asked for it, the guy working there just handed me the whole plate with all 3 slices!  I was planning to sit in the buffet area to eat it, but now that I had more food than I wanted to eat on my own, I took the pizza back downstairs to deck 5 and forced DH to help me eat some of it.  He’s a trooper like that!  I forgot to take a photo of the pizza at that moment, but I ended up getting the Quattro Formaggi again later in the cruise, so here is a photo from then.

Another perk of the hub app listing all the menus is that I could take a screen shot of the menu to post on this review.  I did that for the dining room menus each night too because it comes out much better than when I try to take a photo of the menu with my camera and have to fight the glare from the lights above.  I know that people who sail on Carnival regularly can probably recite these menus by heart because they have not changed in a few years, but I wanted to post them for people reading along who have never cruised with Carnival.

We stayed outside relaxing on the lounge chairs until around 4:30pm, and then went back to our cabin to get ready for formal night.  I am a firm believer that my fellow passengers can take just as good a photo (if not even better!) than the cruise ship photographers, especially on a formal night (oops, I mean a cruise elegant night).  Last year on our Celebrity cruise, it was fun to find a new piece of beautiful art work each night from one of the public spaces around the ship and use that as our backdrop for a photo.  Unfortunately, the décor on the Dream is a bit flashier and does not make for as good of a back drop.  A lot of the art is very busy and loud, and would take away from seeing us in the photo.  Tonight, we opted to keep it simple and stood by the stairs in the elevator bank (luckily the person taking our photo was patient as a bunch of people came running down the stairs right as we were about to take the photo, so we had to wait for them to pass first).

With that chore out of the way, we found a seat on one of the couches on deck 4 that overlooks the atrium so we could listen to some live music.  This became our favorite spot and we sat up here nearly every night.  We had a great view of whichever performer was in that stage area, we could people watch down to all the people at the bar and on the dance floor, and it was never crowded so it was a comfortable little hideaway on a ship with nearly 4000 other passengers.  Tonight’s pre-dinner performer was Chris Ayden playing acoustic jams.

I was pleasantly surprised at how many options of live entertainment were available on the Dream.  I have grown to expect that on Celebrity ships, but I honestly did not think we’d have so many live performers on Carnival.  The Fun Times has a section that lists what acts are performing at what times in each venue, and every night there were 6 musical acts performing, plus Zack in the piano bar, whatever kind of show was happening in the Encore! Theater, and the DJ playing in the nightclub.  Of those 6 musical acts, they had Chris Ayden (an acoustic guitar soloist), Charles and Phoebe (a variety music duet), Machine Company and Horn Troupers (a Motown band with like 6 or 7 members with a full brass section… very unexpected!), Kudos Strings (a strings trio who played incredible arrangements of pop songs… I don’t usually care for strings but these guys were fantastic), Black Jack Duo (a country music duo), and Cavair (Steel Drums at the Lido pool).  There was really something for everyone’s taste, and often two or three acts performed at the same time in different venues so it was hard to pick where we wanted to go!  No complaints though… that’s a good problem to have!  Haha

Anyway, back to tonight… We listened to Chris Ayden for a few minutes, then made our way to the Scarlet Dining Room, all the way aft on deck 3.  Since we ate at the steakhouse last night, this was our first time eating in the MDR and we needed someone to show us to our table.  On the Monday prior to our cruise, I emailed the maitre’d to request a private table for two, hopefully near a window.  I remember from our last Carnival cruise that many of the tables for two get lined up in a row, with just inches between each table, and it’s hard to get in and out of your seat and it kind of feels like you are sitting at one big table with those around you.  While we do enjoy eating dinner with others, that tends to make the meal take way too long, and we did not want to have 2+ hour long dinners every night.  As I mentioned last night, we prefer to keep our dinners to about one hour long, so I thought that if I could request a private table for two, hopefully our wait staff would allow us to eat at our pace and not necessarily the pace of those sitting around us.  I did not get a reply from the maitre’d, but I just assumed the email went through and he was too busy to reply but would hopefully grant my request.  I totally forgot that the MDR is opened in the afternoon on embarkation day, and we could have stopped by to find out our table assignment, so we just left it as a surprise for when we arrived at dinner tonight.

We checked in at the hostess stand and they escorted us up to deck 4, and then all the way to the back of the room.  Wow, did the maitre’d deliver a fabulous table for us!  It was table 637, located along the windows all the way at the back of the room.  All of the tables around us were long tables for 10-12 people, but ours was just a small table for 2, separated from the rest, and it felt like we had special treatment!

I even used the little ledge near the window as a place to stash my camera and purse while we ate.  We could not have asked for a better table for the rest of our cruise dinners.  Our head waitress was Prudence from Zimbabwe, and she was supported by I Ketut and Kadek (not sure where they are from).  They worked together really well, and always kept the meal moving so we were finished by 7:15pm at the latest (and that was on the days when we arrived at 6:05 or 6:10pm so it was still just about a one hour meal).

Here is the menu for tonight’s dinner…

The bottom 2 sections of the menu are available every night, but we never ordered from those items…

Dessert Menu…

Drinks menus…

Kadek brought over a basket of bread and I picked the cranberry whole grain bread.  One thing I never followed was that on some nights he served us each one piece of bread, and on other nights, he left the whole basket on the table for us to serve ourselves.  Maybe it was elegant vs. casual night?  I am not sure.  Personally, I don’t like to fill up on bread so I never take more than one piece and didn’t care if he left the basket or took it away.

We enjoyed beautiful views of the sunset throughout the whole cruise.  Unfortunately, these photos really show how badly the windows need to be washed! Haha

Caesar Salad… I really enjoyed this and ordered it on several nights when I didn’t see a second appetizer that interested me.  For the most part, I ordered two appetizers and one entrée each night.  Tonight was the one exception because I wanted two orders of my entrée.

DH ordered two soups… first, he had the Sicilian Meatball Soup

Then, the Roasted Wild Mushroom Bisque

Looking through my photos, I just realized I missed taking a photo of DH’s entrees.  Oops!  When I ordered my entrée, I asked Prudence if I could have two lobster tails but only one portion of the side dishes.  I’m not sure if it was lost in translation or if it was just that they pre-plate the dishes in the galley so Prudence can’t honor a special request, but she ended up bringing me two of these plates.  It’s a good thing I only had the caesar salad as my appetizer because I was actually able to finish nearly all of the two entrée portions!

Such a beautiful sunset!  Try to ignore the filthy windows hehe

Just as we finished our dinner, it was time for sssshhhhhowtime!  Being all the way back on the upper level of the dining room meant we had no view of the action on the stairs and on the lower level.  The waiters in our corner of the MDR did a good job of trying to get us excited, and of course we all had to wave our napkins in the air.  Cruising has such bizarre traditions, doesn’t it?!

For dessert, I ordered the malted chocolate hazelnut cake.  It was really rich and right up my alley for a sweet chocolatey dessert, although it was more of a fudgey mouse than a cake.

DH ordered the Vanilla Crème Brulee.  He finished every bite of it, so I think that’s a good sign that he liked it!

I don’t think I mentioned this yet… one of the fun features of the Carnival Hub App is that you can mark off the events in the daily schedule which you want to attend, and then if you click on the favorites button, it will just show you those events and you don’t need to scan through the entire calendar.  I think you can also set it up to give you a notification on your phone at the time of the events but I didn’t use that feature.  This is what the favorites screen looks like…

After dinner, we wanted to catch the 8pm comedy show, so we just walked up one flight of stairs when leaving the MDR and we were there!  How convenient!!  This photo was taken at 7:43pm and you can see that the Burgundy Lounge was already quite crowded.  Our options were limited, but we were able to find two seats together.

I liked that the cocktail waiters were always walking around and eager to take drink orders.  Sure, one of us could have walked up to the bar to get the drinks, but we’re on vacation and it’s okay to be lazy.  DH ordered a martini and I ordered The Punchliner drink.

It took about 10 minutes for the waiter to return with our drinks.  Mine was fruity and sweet, just how I like it!

This show was the family friendly show with the same comedian we saw last night, Geoff Keith.  Sometimes I actually prefer these shows because the material content tends to be funnier instead of just relying on cursing and dirty humor to get a laugh.  I didn’t take any specific notes on the theme of this routine but I did like how he had a pre-written script rather than just improving and making fun of the audience.

The comedy show ended at 8:30pm, so we made our way all the way forward to get seats for the big production show in the Encore! Theatre.  When we arrived, the doors were still closed.

No worries!  They have a display case right outside of the entrance so we checked out some of the awards that the Dream has won over the years.  This record seems like it was made to be broken…

We still had a few minutes before they were going to open the doors, so I left DH waiting there and went downstairs to talk to someone at Guest Services about our experience with FTTF on embarkation day.  Our assistant stewardess indicated that she would speak to her manager about her mistake in not realizing we had purchased FTTF and therefore not having our cabin ready by the time we boarded at 11:45 yesterday morning.  I expected a phone call or letter in our mailbox with an apology, but I gave it the remainder of the day yesterday and all day today to no avail.  With nothing better to do in the few minutes before getting seats for tonight’s show, this seemed like a good time to voice my concerns at Guest Services.

As I expected, it wasn’t very busy at this time since the late seating for dinner had just started and most people were enjoying their evening on the ship right now.  There were one or two people at the general line, but I was able to walk right up to the desk and be helped immediately in the FTTF/Diamond/Platinum line.  I explained that we were disappointed to not receive two of the benefits we paid for when we boarded the ship yesterday… having immediate access to our clean cabin, and having priority delivery of our one checked suitcase.  At this point, it was water under the bridge for us, so to speak, but I did want to make sure that someone higher up the chain knew what happened so they could work to make sure it does not happen to other passengers on future cruises.  The representative took notes on what I told him and said he would pass the information along to a Guest Services manager.  The whole thing was very quick and DH was surprised to see me back upstairs within 10 minutes of leaving.

Shortly after that, they opened the doors so we could get seats in the theater.  I prefer sitting up in the balcony level so I can have an unobstructed view of the whole stage and not need to worry about someone tall sitting in front of me and blocking my view.  Unfortunately, that does make it hard to take clear photos of the performers, especially without using a flash.  Every night, they opened the doors 30 minutes prior to the start of the show and there was a big rush of people all arriving at that time.  This photo was taken at 9:05pm and already, most of the seats in the middle sections of the lower level were taken.

While the theater never filled up completely for the late shows, most of the good seats were taken pretty early leaving just the back of the balcony available for people who arrived later.  Perhaps this was a sign of sailing on a ship filled to capacity during spring break with lots of 3rd and 4th passengers in the cabins, or maybe it’s just how things always go on the Dream because it was the biggest ship we’d ever sailed on, but either way, we made sure to arrive early for all the shows to get a decent seat.

Tonight’s Playlist Productions show was Motor City, featuring Motown and R&B hits from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.  I had seen this show already on the Carnival Sunshine in 2013, but I enjoyed it then and that was over 5 years ago so I didn’t mind seeing it a second time.  At around 9:20pm, they started the pre-show and pulled up a few daring members of the audience to dance on stage.  Sitting up in the balcony meant we were saved from that embarrassment!

They also had everyone in the audience stand up and learn a little dance routine as a fun way to get us excited for the show.

The show itself started around 9:30pm and ran for just over 30 minutes.  Before I share my views about this show, I need to put in a little disclaimer…  As with everything else in this review, these are my personal views and you may or may not agree with them.  Any negative opinions are not meant to upset or offend anyone, but merely to educate you about my experiences.  With that said, we were not impressed with most of the production shows on this ship.  Maybe it was because this was a relatively new cast and it was only their third cruise performing these shows, but the singing was pitchy (and sometimes downright cringe-worthy), and the dancing was often sloppy and out of sync.  We enjoy going to theater and have held season tickets to the Broadway traveling shows in San Jose for 6 seasons and counting, so maybe we were being overly critical?  We did not expect Broadway-caliber performances on a cruise ship, but we expected more than this.  I actually think the song selection for all the shows was great, and Carnival knows how to pick crowd-pleasers that appeal to a mass audience, so maybe we would have enjoyed the shows more had we seen the prior cast last month, or even if we saw this cast after a few more weeks of practice?  We really did want to love the shows as that’s usually one of our favorite parts of cruising, and we went into each of the 4 shows on this cruise optimistic and with an open mind, but sadly this cast fell short for us.  There are 8 performers in the cast… 4 men and 4 women.  Within the cast, there are singers who dance, and there are dancers who sing, but perhaps none that excelled at both.  To give credit where it is due, I will say that there was one male and one female dancer who we could tell had good training and technique, but we almost never heard them sing!  With all of that said, we did attend all 4 shows and stayed through the whole production each time, so they did have some redeeming qualities.  We had fun and enjoyed it for what it was.

When the show ended, the cast danced out into the lobby for an after-party.  As you can see from the people lining the railing on decks 4 and 5, and from the packed dance floor down on deck 3, everyone was having a good time as the DJ played more Motown hits and Gary had us all up and dancing.

We sat in “our spot” on deck 4 to observe all the excitement, then went back to Ocean Plaza to listen to Machine Company and Horn Troupers play more Motown classics.  This band was fantastic, and it was refreshing to see a big horn section in a cruise ship musical act as we don’t see that very often.  We stayed until around 11:30pm, then headed back to the cabin to rest up for tomorrow in Costa Maya!

Day 17: Saturday, March 17 ~ Sea Day #5

Day 17: Saturday, March 17 ~ Sea Day #5

The final sea day of the cruise conjures up thoughts so packing and moping around the ship, fearing the return to reality that comes with the end of a
vacation.  The one good thing that made this final sea day different than all other final sea days was that today was St. Patrick’s Day!  How can you mope on such a festive holiday?  We’re not Irish, but everyone is Irish today!

As usual, I woke up before DH.  Knowing that would likely happen, I put a few piles of dirty laundry and a few empty packing cubes over near the bathroom last night so I could silently sit on the floor in the glow of the bathroom nightlight and start folding and rolling our laundry to start the packing process.  I managed to get through most of our clothes before DH woke up, so I think that was a good use of time.  The hardest part of packing is figuring out how much we can fit in our big suitcase without going over the weight limit, and then trying to cram everything else into our rolling carry on bags and backpacks.  On all of our previous cruises, packing is a full-day project where we do little bits at a time throughout the day.  Despite my best efforts, sadly, today would be no different.

Now that DH was awake, it was time for a break from packing, so we went upstairs to the buffet for breakfast.

I was very pleased with the number of activities offered on sea days during this cruise, and we had quite a few things we wanted to participate in today.  First up was that Eddy gave a talk in the theater called “10 things you didn’t know about ship life.”  It was a behind-the-scenes look at life working on a cruise ship, followed by a question and answer period with 3 of Eddy’s team members.  Cruise ships are like their own floating cities and it takes thousands of people to keep the operation running smoothly.  Not only do all of these people work on the cruise ship, but they also live here.  When they finish their work day, they don’t get to go home to their family.  They go to a small cabin, which they often share with another crew member, spend a few hours eating, showering, and sleeping (not necessarily in that order), and then they do it all over again tomorrow.  I find the whole thing fascinating and always appreciate when a cruise offers a talk on this topic.

Eddy explained that there is a whole language of words that only people who work on cruise ships can understand.  For example, paisano is someone who is from the same country as you but works in a different department on the ship.  If someone gives you a banana, it means they are reprimanding you for something you did wrong.

Several of the “10 things” were things I already knew, like that there is a bar for the crew on the lower decks, and that the crew always know the best places to find free wifi while in port.  It was an interesting perspective, and Eddy was funny and entertaining, as always.  The talk lasted about an hour, and was followed by a talk about ship navigation given by Captain Leo.  We listened to a similar talk on the Equinox, but it was given by one of the other officers, not by the ship captain!  It was pretty cool that he took the time to come talk to us.

After that, we went back to the cabin to do some more packing until it was time for lunch.  Not only was today the Extravaganza Lunch Buffet, but they also had decorations set up for St. Patrick’s Day.  There was even a station selling green beer!

So I have a serious question… was this little piggy stashed away at the back of the freezer for the last 2 weeks?!  Or did they pick him up while we were in Aruba? Haha

They weren’t kidding when they labeled this an extravaganza!  There were so many great options that I wound up with food piled high on my plate… there was seafood paella, lasagna, meatballs, fish and chips, grilled zucchini, and a few other things buried on the bottom

After all of that, I barely had room for dessert, but I couldn’t pass up dipping a donut in the green chocolate fountain!

Lots of shamrocks and green cakes

They also had this cocktail special for sale. It was called the shamrock cocktail, made with vodka, melon liquor, and pineapple juice, and cost $5 including the souvenir cup.  I asked the bartender if it was possible to just get the cocktail poured in a normal cup so it would be covered by the beverage package.  After consulting with her manager, she said that was okay and poured me a little sample in a champagne flute.  It was okay, but I think the color was more fun than the actual drink.

After lunch, we went down to the pool, grabbed 2 of the wicker chairs in the front corner, and ordered some drinks from the roaming drinks server.  If you’ve read my 2015 and 2016 reviews, then you know our tradition on St. Patrick’s Day. Once again, DH packed his tube of green food dye so we could improve our beverages for today.  This is what happened when he got his hands on my pina colada!

I am wearing my “lucky shirt” while DH is wearing a Thanksgiving shirt, but we’re both rocking our green party beads!

We hung around out there for another hour or so until it was time for the hot glass auction down in the Grand Foyer.  As per the contract between Celebrity and the Corning Museum, they auction off 7 of the pieces created on each cruise.  Proceeds from six of the pieces (2 by each of the gaffers) go towards scholarships for students to learn the art of glass blowing, and the final piece is something created by all 3 gaffers together and the proceeds go to Celebrity’s charity of choice- the World Wildlife Fund.

We both LOVED this piece by Tom of a baby sea turtle hatching from an egg.  We thought it was so beautiful and unique and we tried to bid on it, but were soon outbid beyond our budget.  It sold for over $1000.

We couldn’t stay for the whole auction because it was running late and we needed to get back upstairs for the last day of 3pm music trivia at the Sky
Lounge.  Like I said before, there were a lot of activities we wanted to participate in today… go big, then go home!  Or something like that hehe  When we got upstairs, our teammates were waiting for us so I’m glad we made the effort to show up.  I think the activities team was running out of ideas by this 14th day of the cruise, so there was no theme again today.  That’s okay though as it leads to more diverse song possibilities.  As usual, we did fairly well, but not well enough to win.  So now it’s official, we did not win any of the rounds of trivia that we participated in on this cruise.  We always had fun playing though, so I guess that’s all that really matters!

We went back to the cabin to finish packing our big suitcase.  We had to put it outside of our cabin by 10pm, I think?  Not wanting to worry about it during dinner or when we were at the show, it just made more sense to finish with it now.  I always bring my suitcase scale with me from home, so we weighed the bag and spent a few trials pulling things out to get it under 50 pounds.  I swear, clothing weighs more on the trip home!

Keeping with tradition, we went to the Martini Bar for a pre-dinner cocktail.  I ordered a Blue Wave Martini, but of course DH brought his green food dye to jazz it up a bit!  Usually the bartenders notice us drinking bright green drinks and give us quizzical looks because they realize that wasn’t what they served us, but that didn’t happen tonight.  Maybe these guys are just too busy to notice?

Even though it was the last night of the cruise, the bartenders still put on quite a show.  Whenever one of them was pouring a bunch of drinks like this, another bartender was blowing a whistle to draw more attention.

At 7pm, we went to our last dinner in the MDR.  Cervine had a table for 2 next to the window in Pinto’s section ready and waiting for us.

 Chilled Seafood Salad

 Warm Goat Cheese Croustillant

 French Onion Soup

 Vitello Tonnato

 Aged Prime Rib of Beef

 Creamy Corn Farrotto

I don’t think I have posted this yet… This is the drinks from the dessert menu and it remains the same for the whole cruise

 Dessert Menu

New York Cheesecake with Strawberry Topping

 Chocolate Cake

 Our waiters Jose and Pinto

After dinner, we went over to the theater for one final show.  Eddy had mentioned that he likes the final show of the cruise to be a big production show, and this show definitely fit that description!  Euphoria highlights the aerialists and acrobats in a performance similar to Cirque du Soleil.  I really loved this show and I was so impressed that these acts could perform perfectly on a moving cruise ship!  They are all extremely talented!

They flew out over the audience creating a really cool effect!

The dancers came out dressed in these funky outfits…

…which somehow morphed into a giant inflatable crab!

Inflatable sting rays swimming down the aisles

Eddy fondly refers to these aerialists as “bed sheet dancers” haha

When the show ended at 10pm, we went upstairs to the Sky Lounge for “The Voice of Eclipse Karaoke Finals.”  DH loves to sing karaoke on cruises, but somehow we never managed to make it to karaoke over the entire 2 weeks.  They offered it 4 or 5 times, but it was always at 9:45pm in Quasar and half the time we were still at the big show in the theater at that time, or by the time the show ended, we were just too tired to do anything else that night.  There was one time that we stopped by, but no one was there so we left.  I guess it just wasn’t meant to be this time around. The event tonight was not an open event- they seemed to have pre-selected 3 people to sing one song each, and then the audience voted by applause for who should be crowned the winner.

Since we knew we’d stick around for a little while, I decided to try out one of the cocktails from the Sky Lounge menu.  We had been up here nearly every day for music trivia, but I never wanted a cocktail at that time (usually, I needed something with caffeine or just a bottle of water after a hot day in port!). I ordered the Sagittarius, made with Ketel One vodka, sherry, maple syrup, fresh lemon juice, strawberries, and Veuve Clicquot.  While the cocktail was quite tasty, it took them 15 minutes to make it and bring it to my table!  It wasn’t even crowded at the lounge so I don’t know what took so long, but maybe not many people order these cocktails from this bar?

The first guy to perform sang My Way by Frank Sinatra.  He had a great voice and really won over the crowd, but I think it helped that he had a lot of family members loudly cheering for him.

I think this lady sang an Adele song, but I don’t remember exactly what.

And somehow I missed taking a photo of the third performer.  In the end, the first guy won.  Personally, I actually liked the lady better, but like I said, the guy had a big family to loudly cheer for him and that’s what won in the end.

Back Before Sunset was performing in the Grand Foyer for the St. Patrick’s Day party.  It was nearly over when we arrived, but we caught the last song or two, then went back to the cabin for the night.

Day 16: Friday, March 16 ~ Sea Day #4

Day 16: Friday, March 16 ~ Sea Day #4

I am so sorry to say that I forgot to take photos of today’s daily schedule.  On all of my previous cruises, I brought home all of the daily schedule papers so if I forgot to take any photos, or if I realized one of the photos was blurry and needed a re-do, I could flip through the pile of papers and get what I needed. This time, we were very tight on space and weight in our bags so I decided to leave all the papers behind. I thought I had taken all the photos I needed, and I almost never refer back to the originals once I get home, so why bother schlepping all of that extra weight?  Well, it looks like I did accidentally miss taking photos of the schedule for today, so I apologize for that.

After going to sleep so early last night, I was awake at 7:15am today.  I couldn’t fall back asleep and I didn’t want to wake up DH, so I quickly got dressed, grabbed my camera, and left the cabin to walk around the ship taking lots of photos of the public spaces while they were still vacant.  I already posted all of these photos at the start of the review, so I won’t repost them here.  About an hour later, I arrived at the Solarium.  I was getting hungry so I stopped by the Aqua Spa Café for a light breakfast.  They have a bunch of options set out on individual plates, and the options remained the same for the whole cruise.

Dry cereal canisters

Fresh fruit and turkey wraps with tomato, kale, and cinnamon sweet potato spread

Avocado bruschetta on multi grain toast with mashed avocado, tomato, chive, and grated eggs; a whole wheat bagel with peanut butter, apple, bananas, and blueberries

Zucchini muffins, banana nut muffins, and 3 types of fruit and nut bars
(apricot/coconut/walnut/honey, pumpkin seed/chia seed/raisin, and
dates/almonds/figs/apricot/honey)

I picked out a muffin and an apricot and nut bar, and I ordered one of the juices from the menu.  This was the Purple Rain, made with blackberry, blueberry, pear, apple, and acai.  Everything was light and tasty, and it was a nice change from the breakfast I ordered from room service on all of the port days.

After my light breakfast, I continued walking around the ship, snapping more photos.  At 8:45, I went back to the elevators outside of the buffet, planning to head down to the cabin and see if DH was awake yet.  When the elevator doors opened, guess who stepped out… DH!  We had perfect timing!  I asked how he knew where to find me and he had a funny story to tell me… When he first went to look for me, he went to the MDR to see if I was eating breakfast there.  Cervine was standing at the hostess stand and she told DH she had seen me stop by at 8am when the MDR first opened so I could take some photos, and then I left. Glad to see she was keeping track of me and that she let DH know I had been there!  That’s when DH decided to go up to the buffet because he was planning to wait for me up there, assuming that I would need to eat breakfast eventually. When I ran into him, I told him that I had already eaten a light breakfast at the Aqua Spa Café.  He thought that sounded good so we went back down there so he could get something to eat.  Of course I couldn’t let him eat by himself, so I took another mini-muffin and fruit and nut bar.  I also ordered a pina kale juice, made with pineapple, kale, cucumber, and I skipped the ginger.

After breakfast #2, we went back to the cabin and relaxed on the balcony for a few hours, just gazing out at the endless ocean and watching the waves pass by.  At noon, it was time for our next feeding so we went down to the buffet for lunch.  The theme was Falafel and Kebabs, and they had a station set up with several kinds of each.

I tried 2 kinds of falafel but didn’t care for them. The lamb kebab with tzatziki sauce and hummus was quite tasty, as was the pasta and pizza of the day.

We took some dessert to go and brought it downstairs to eat by the pool.  I love red velvet cake, but this was very dry and I didn’t like it at all.  They made a huge apple pie in one of the paella pans, and that was delicious!  I was tempted to go back upstairs to get more but restrained myself.

There is a section of upright chairs and couches when you first enter the pool area on the starboard side.  Whenever we had trouble finding a vacant lounge chair, we could usually find a place to sit over here.  It was close enough to all of the action in the pool and with the DJ and activities team, but still far enough away that we could have our own little quiet corner.

We pulled 2 of the chairs to the side and relaxed there until it was time for pool volleyball.  DH really wanted to play pool volleyball, but he was disappointed to learn it is only offered this one time through the whole 2 week cruise. They have a tournament where several teams compete and the winning team goes on to then compete against a team of ship officers.  Flory was hosting the event and when he asked for volunteers to play, DH ran right over to him.  They had enough people to form 3 teams, so Flory divided the players up and DH’s team was playing in the first round.  They had a few minutes to practice, and then started the game.

DH’s team won this round, so they got out and the losing team played against the third team.  I think the third team won that round, so DH’s team got back in the pool and they played each other to determine who goes on to play against the officers.  DH’s team was really strong and they won the tournament!  They had a few minutes to rest, then Flory introduced the officers and it was time for the final round.

DH serving the ball

The teams were pretty evenly matched so the score kept going back and forth for who was in the lead, but in the end, the officers pulled away with a victory.  To be fair, they probably have more practice considering they get to play pool volleyball on every cruise, whereas the people on DH’s team likely haven’t had as much experience.  In the name of good sportsmanship, everyone walked away with a medal and Flory lead the crowd in a rousing rendition of “We Are The Champions”

Volleyball ended with just enough time for DH to get dried off before we had to go up to the Sky Lounge for music trivia.  At this point in the cruise, our teammates were counting on us showing up to help with the more current songs, so we couldn’t let them down!  There was no real theme today, just a bunch of random songs, but our team did really well. We scored 24 out of 30 points, but of course another team scored 29 points and beat us.  We were okay with that though because we were proud of our team’s performance.

After trivia, I wanted to go watch the hot glass show because this was the last one on our cruise, and DH went back to the cabin to change out of his bathing suit.  When I arrived, Tom was working on a vase with a pretty twisting pattern on the outside.

It is so impressive how these guys work together so seamlessly.  This was Tom’s project, but Jeremy jumped right in there to do the blowing work. They worked together as a team with an almost unspoken knowledge of what needed to be done.

When they pull out the giant gloves, you know the project is nearly finished.

Right around then, DH showed up with a little treat. We get drinks like this at one of our favorite restaurants at home in San Jose, so he was super excited to find it on the ship.  This was the Margarita Coronita from the new menu at the Sunset Bar, and DH drew a lot of attention as he carried it over to the hot glass area, with everyone wanting to know what that was and where he got it lol

(yes, he is still wearing the medal he won from the pool volleyball tournament haha)

At the end of the show, the gaffers raffled off 4 of the pieces they made during the cruise.  Since the next cruise would be the last one with the Corning Museum on the Eclipse, they wanted to clean out some of the older projects.  I really hoped we could win one of these because they were all so beautiful, but unfortunately, we were not that lucky. The man sitting right next to me did win, so I was close, but not close enough!  This would have made an incredible souvenir to bring home from the cruise.

There is a funny story about that larger piece on the far right side.  That is a giant bowl with an irregular shape.  Tom gave a disclaimer when he picked that piece to be part of the raffle. They usually give out some bubble wrap to protect the pieces for transport home, but he warned us that the larger piece would not survive airline travel.  He said he normally puts a piece that large into a crate for special shipping, and that if we were flying home after the cruise, we could not have that piece.  He said that if the first 3 tickets he pulls belong to people who are flying home, they must pick the 3 vases, and then he would do another raffle for only the people traveling by car to try to win that large piece.  As it turned out, the very first ticket he picked belonged to a lady who lives in Florida, would be driving home from the cruise, and who really wanted that big piece! It was fate for her to get it!  I would love to see how she put that on display in her home because it was really quite large and heavy!

Tonight was our last Elegant Chic night, so after the raffle ended, we went back to the cabin to get ready.

After a quick photo shoot outside the entrance to Blu, we went to the World Class Bar for a few pre-dinner drinks.  DH had the Zacapa Old Fashioned and I had the Celebrity No. Ten.  I love how it worked out that they are on the same page of the menu for easy photographing hehe

I don’t think I posted this yet, but this is the wine and cocktails menu from the MDR.  It was the same menu for the whole cruise.

 Tonight’s dinner menu

Creamy Salmon Rillette

Elderflower Blush cocktail

Broiled Lobster Tail (I requested 2 lobsters but only 1 portion of the side dishes)

Creamy Wild Mushroom Risotto

Dessert Menu

We skipped dessert tonight because we wanted to hear Back Before Sunset playing in the Grand Foyer.  They always put on a lively set that is worth checking out.

On most cruises, they do one of the big production shows on formal nights.  Eddy said that he likes to save that for the last night of the cruise to end on a high note, so tonight’s show was more subdued.  It featured the 6 core singers from the shows, each singing a Broadway showtune of their choosing, backed by the Eclipse Orchestra.  As I’ve already mentioned, we are big fans of Broadway shows, so we were looking forward to this performance.  They all have wonderful voices so it was great to see them show it off!  They sang songs from Motown, Les Mis, Cabaret, Guys and Dolls, Jersey Boys, and a few others.

The ladies sang a “Single Girl’s Medley” where each sang one of these songs:  On My Own from Les Mis, Maybe This Time from Cabaret, and I Don’t Know How to Love Him from Jesus Christ Superstar.

Then the men all sang Bring Him Home from Les Mis.

After the show ended, they had another event called the Liar’s Club.  This is a game hosted by one of the women from the activities team, and the contestants are Eddy, Captain Leo, and the comedian from last night’s show, Dan Wilson. They pick a word that most people have never heard of, but it is really a real word, and the 3 contestants try to convince the audience of what the definition is.  After all 3 have had a chance to say what they think the word means, the audience votes by applause as to who we think said the correct definition, and then they reveal who really got it right.  They used 4 different words, and the contestants did everything from just stating “oh, I know that word, the definition is ****”, to telling a big long-winded story to explain the meaning of the word.  Some of their replies were funnier than others, but it was a clever game and we learned a few new words in the process!

Does anyone know what zopissa means??

The show ended around 11pm, and we went back to the cabin to rest up for our last full day of the cruise.

Day 11: Sunday, March 11 ~ Sea Day #3

Day 11: Sunday, March 11 ~ Sea Day #3

Today was a much-needed sea day sandwiched between 2 sets of 4 port days in a row.  Even though we did not set an alarm this morning, we still woke up at 8:15am.  At least we got over 8 hours of sleep!  We took our time getting ready, then went to the Oceanview Buffet for breakfast.  It was nice to add some variety after eating basically the same thing for breakfast for the last 5 days (how ironic considering I eat the exact same thing for breakfast every morning at home! Haha)

We spent 2 hours relaxing on our balcony, watching the waves go by, with me writing in my trip journal while DH read a book. Since our cabin is on the starboard side of the ship, we were facing north for today’s journey west.  We had shade all day on our balcony, which was great! There was nothing else to see but water because there aren’t any islands in this part of the Caribbean Sea, but maybe people on the port side balconies could see Venezuela?

At noon, DH wanted to get some coffee from Café al Bacio, so I joined him for a walk downstairs.  While there, I noticed they were playing archery in the Grand Foyer.  It was really a neat set up- they had an inflatable target area and 4 cone-shaped nozzles blowing air straight up so there was a ball hovering mid-air.  The contestants had to knock the ball down, either by hitting the ball directly with their arrow, or by hitting the cone so the air stream was blocked and the ball would fall.  It was fun to watch, and the players were actually pretty good at it!

Eddy was hosting a game of music trivia name that tune at the pool, so we went upstairs to give it a go.  Today’s theme was “Names” so every song title had a name in it and we had to guess both the song title and the artist.  They played 15 songs for a total of 30 points.  We only got an 18 out of 30, so we didn’t stand a chance because the winner scored a perfect 30!  I did think it was fun that they picked songs from the 50’s through the 90’s to appeal to a wider audience, but that also means we are less likely to win because we don’t know most of the older songs.

It had been several hours since our last feeding, so we went upstairs to get something to eat for lunch from the buffet.  The theme of the day was Mediterranean food, and they had a specialty station with made to order schwarma.  I wasn’t in the mood for that, so I opted for a random assortment of carbs (as usual!).  The dumplings from the Asian station were delicious!

For dessert, I went over to the Slush Bar and ordered the Mint Cookie drink.  This is by far my favorite drink from this bar, but it is very filling so I only let myself have it one time on this cruise.  It’s totally worth it though!

Watching the wake on a lazy sea day

We spent some more time relaxing on the balcony until 2:45pm when we made our way up to the Sky Lounge for another round of music trivia with the CLA staff.  Today’s theme was songs from movies, and we had to guess the title of the movie, not the actual song name.  They had 20 songs for this game, and some of them were much harder than others!  We teamed up with a pair of ladies which did help because we knew the answers to different movies from them, but we still only scored 14 out of 20.  I think the winners scored a 17 or 18, so again, we didn’t win, but that’s okay because we made some new friends and we had fun trying!

Next, we went down to the World Class Bar for the mixology class.  DH had a great experience with this class on the Equinox, so he wanted to do it again as long as the bartender was teaching about different drinks.  The class was taught by one of the World Class Bar bartenders named Marius, and we ended up having a private lesson because we were the only people that showed up!

The class was very different from 2 years ago because instead of DH going behind the bar to actually make the drinks, Marius just talked about the process of how to make each drink, and why they use certain shakers or strainers or whatever other supplies.  Last time, we learned about 3 categories of cocktails (a Collins, a Swizzle, and a mojito), whereas this time, Marius taught us how to make 4 specific drinks from the World Class Bar menu.  Last time, the class cost $35, but it was only $25 this time (plus a mandatory 18% gratuity).  We learned a few new pointers and it did give us an appreciation for the art behind making cocktails, but we weren’t sure how useful it was since it’s not like we will ever make these specific cocktails at home.  The drinks he taught us were the Kentucky Calling, Celebrity No. Ten, Ketel One Strawberry Fields, and Zacapa Above the Clouds.  For the last one, Marius pulled out the fancy smoker machine, which is always fun to watch.

The class was about an hour long, and then we went back to the cabin to get ready for our second Elegant Chic night.

Random side thought that I am going to talk about now because this was when I took this photo… Sometimes it can be a bit disorienting when you get off the mid-ship elevators on your deck to go back to your cabin.  If you didn’t pay attention when you got on the elevator, then you may not know if you are on the port or starboard side of the ship, and then you don’t know if you need to turn left or right out of the elevator and where you need to go to get back to your cabin.  Today I had an epiphany!  There are different pieces of art hanging on the walls opposite the elevators, and it is different on every deck as well as on the port vs. starboard side.  If you take note of which piece of art is on your side of the ship on your deck, then you will know that you are on the correct side if you see that piece of art when stepping off the elevator (and if you do not see that piece of art, then you are on the opposite side of the ship!). This slice of a tree trunk was the art on deck 10, starboard side:

If we stepped off the elevator on deck 10 and saw this, we knew we were on our side of the ship.  On top of that, if we saw this tree trunk, we knew we had to turn towards the left to walk in the direction of our cabin.  If we got off the elevator and did not see the tree trunk, that meant we were on the port side and needed to turn towards the right and cut through the library to get back to our cabin.  It sounds silly, but it really made a huge difference in feeling like we were “home” and knowing our way around the ship!  Thank you Celebrity for posting so many different pieces of art to make this solution possible!

It became a game for us to seek out spots around the ship that gave a nice
background for a photo when we were all dressed up for the evening.  Elegant Chic nights are even harder than casual nights because there are more ship photographers to contend with, but we got creative tonight and took some photos in the library.

When we arrived at the hostess stand for dinner, Cervine greeted us by name and knew our cabin number and preferred table number without us even speaking a word!  I think this is one of the (many) benefits of a 14 night cruise.  We spend such a long time on the ship that the staff really gets a chance to know us, whereas on a 7 night cruise, the cruise is over before you get a chance to form a routine and know the staff.  Dinner was delicious as always, especially since we were seated with our favorite waiters, Pinto and Jose!

Tonight, we decided to try some dessert wines, and we both liked them so much that we asked the sommelier to bring us the bottles so we could take a photo in hopes of buying a bottle to drink at home!

Frosty Ice “Bombe”

Tonight’s show in the main theater was called Amade. There was no real plot to this show, but the best way to describe it is a combination of Lady Gaga and Mozart. The costumes were incredible, and we really enjoyed the dance numbers to modern music.  Personally, the highlight for me is always when the aerialists perform because they are extremely talented, especially considering they perform on a moving cruise ship!

I apologize that these photos are so blurry. We always preferred to sit at the back of the theater so we could make a quick escape as soon as the show ended, but that meant I had to zoom in a lot to take my photos and they always came out blurry.

After a full third sea day, we went to bed early tonight, excited to finally arrive at the ABC islands tomorrow!

Day 6: Tuesday, March 6 ~ Sea Day #2

Day 6: Tuesday, March 6 ~ Sea Day #2

Today’s daily schedule:

Last night was the one and only time we changed our clocks on this cruise.  It was nice that Captain Leo waited until the second sea day to spring our clocks ahead one hour to match the time zone in the Caribbean so we didn’t lose an hour of sleep on the very first night of the cruise. Daylight savings time occurred on the sea day mid-way through our itinerary when we were sailing from Barbados to Bonaire, so that put us back on track with the Miami time zone and saved us the need to change our clocks at the end of the cruise.  Before going to sleep last night, we put the breakfast room service door tag out and requested an 8:30-9am delivery time with hopes of sleeping in a little bit, but also to test out the process.  We like to eat breakfast on our balcony each port day to avoid the chaos at the buffet, so this was a good chance to test it out and see how things go before tomorrow when we will arrive at our first port of call. This is the breakfast room service menu for Concierge (and Aqua) class cabins.

Despite my best efforts to sleep late, I woke up at 7am and the ship was rocking so much that I couldn’t fall back asleep.  I got up and sat outside on the balcony and took notes in my trip journal and let DH sleep a little longer.  It looked like there was a beautiful sunrise but we couldn’t see the sun directly on the starboard side this morning (I’ll bet early risers with port-side cabins had a great view though!)

At 8:25am, the cabin phone rang with a heads up that our breakfast was on the way. I have a feeling a lot of people use breakfast room service as a wake up call, so it’s a nice touch that they call on the phone first to give you a minute to open your eyes and put on some clothes or a robe or something before they come knocking on the door.  The food arrived promptly at 8:30am, and everything was hot and exactly as we ordered, including my special request for smoked salmon!  We ordered some orange juice with our breakfast- the menu has premium and regular OJ and we ordered one of each, but could not tell which was which!  I have a feeling one is fresh squeezed (presumably the premium OJ), so we ordered that for the rest of the cruise, but like I said, I really couldn’t tell the difference from the regular juice.

Instead of taking the whole stack of plates outside, I like to divide up our food inside and then we can just take one plate outside for each of us.

My breakfast (before adding cream cheese and salmon to the bagel)

DH’s breakfast

We popped open the bottle of champagne from embarkation day (another Concierge class perk), and made some mimosas to go with our breakfast.

We stayed out on the balcony until around 10:30am, and then relocated to the solarium.  It was another windy and cool day, so it was nice to hang out in the solarium which is a bit warmer than out by the pool.  We noticed many chairs were occupied by towels and books, but not as many as yesterday by the pool.  Luckily, there were 2 loungers available but they were in the middle of the row so we had to crawl up onto them.  Why must they set up the seats so close together?!  It gets so awkward to climb in and out of your seat, and I can only imagine how challenging this is for anyone with mobility issues.

Sorry for the terrible lighting in this photo! The section where we were sitting was right near the door to the elevators and the spa where the ceiling is a solid tarp and much dimmer than under the glass ceiling in the main seating area.

The Slush Bar is located right next to the Pool Bar on deck 12 and offers fancier versions of the standard boozy slushy drinks. These drinks take a few minutes to make, and there is only one bartender stationed at this bar, so it can take a while to get your drink, especially if there is a line before you get there. The bar is only opened from noon until 4pm, so we made sure to be there right when they opened to avoid a long wait. Here is the menu (sorry for the glare!), and the drinks are included with the premium beverage package.

Side note (because I took this photo while we were waiting for the bartender to make our drinks):  This is a photo of our sea pass cards.  Since we had the classic alcohol package when we boarded the ship, there is a code “CALL” preprinted at the bottom of the card.  When we paid for our upgrades to the premium package, they added the “PALL” sticker.  If your sticker falls off (or if you take your seapass card in the ocean/pool and it wears away), you can go to guest services and they will print you a new card with PALL printed on it.  Notice the bottom left corner of the card where it says “068”.  The seapass cards all list the last 3 digits of your cabin number, but not the first digit which is for the deck.  I think Celebrity started doing this because people forgot their cabin numbers and kept going to guest services to ask, but I’m not so sure this was the best solution.  If I lost my seapass card and someone found it, they could go to every deck and try to open the door for the cabins ending in 068… with only 7 decks on the ship with cabin numbers ending in 068, it wouldn’t take long for that person to find my cabin.  Just a thought!

DH ordered the Golden Coconut (a gourmet frozen pina colada), and I had the Spiked Razz Slush.  We both enjoyed our drinks, but honestly couldn’t taste much difference from a regular pina colada or daiquiri at the pool bar so we only returned here one or two more times during the cruise.

Back in 2016, the Slush Bar served drinks in disposable to-go cups, similar to what Starbucks uses for their frapuccinos.  We thought those cups were fun, and were disappointed to see that the Eclipse just uses the same tall hard plastic cups that they use at all the outdoor bars for frozen drinks.  I guess Celebrity decided it was better to use cups that were washable instead of wasting the disposable ones.  I can’t really blame them… it’s not like we can really take these drinks too far considering they aren’t allowed off the ship!

We took our drinks back to our loungers in the Solarium and relaxed there for a little while until we started to get hungry for lunch. One corner of the Solarium houses the Aqua Spa Café, which serves lighter and healthier options for breakfast and lunch.  Despite the name, this spot is not restricted to people staying in Aqua Class cabins. Anyone can eat here as long as they are over age 16 (because that is the restriction for being inside the Solarium). The food was pre-plated and served buffet style, and there is a juice bar where they will make smoothies and juices both off the menu and made-to-order.  I don’t think I ever took a photo of the lunch menu (oops!), but here is the breakfast menu (taken later in the cruise, but it was the same for the whole cruise so I may as well post it now!)

These are the food options for lunch…

Fresh fruit, no idea what the white thing is- maybe yogurt??, turkey and tomato wrap

Beet salad, Caprese salad, bowtie pasta with pesto

The end of the line had a few other salads like tuna, chicken, and salmon salad.

There were also some breadsticks and a biscuit/scone type thing but I didn’t try any of these

I opted for the bowtie pesto pasta salad and the salmon salad and brought the little plates back to our loungers so I could share them with DH.  Both were light and tasty, and they made for a good pre-lunch snack.

Of course, we can’t resist checking out what they had upstairs at the Oceanview buffet, so we took turns going up there to get a few more things to eat.  Today’s theme was A Taste of Italy and featured a fresh mozzarella station with pesto and a few kinds of tomatoes.  There was also several kinds of lasagna (DH loved the beef lasagna), meatballs, and other pasta dishes.  I ended up with a slice of pizza topped with shrimp (not a combination I’ve ever tried before but it was bizarrely tasty), pasta salad, seafood salad, fresh mozzarella with pesto, and of course, a piece of that yummy chocolate fudge cake.

We ate our lunches on our loungers in the Solarium, then relaxed there for a few more hours until 3pm, when we went upstairs to the Sky Lounge for music trivia.  This was actually the start of a tradition for us, and we attended many of the 3pm music trivia sessions in the Sky Lounge throughout the cruise.  It was offered every day, regardless of if it was a port day or a sea day, and there was a core group of about 50 people who seemed to show up every day just like us!  At first, DH and I played on a team of just the 2 of us, and while we did respectably, we knew we wouldn’t ever win without more man power.  At some point later in the cruise, we teamed up with a couple of baby boomers and realized the secret to music trivia success: form a multi-generational team!!  DH and I knew all the songs from the late 70’s through today, and the baby boomers knew all the songs from before then.  We were allowed to have teams of up to 6 people, so this made it more fun and gave us better odds at winning.  No spoilers just yet to see if we ever did win a trivia game!

Today’s trivia theme was Broadway Music Trivia. They played 15 songs and we just had to guess the name of the show, not the song name.  DH and I have had a subscription to see the traveling Broadway shows that come to San Jose for the last 4 seasons (and we’re already signed up for the 2018-2019 season!), and I have seen over 50 Broadway shows from when I lived in New York, so we thought we had good odds with this theme.  In the end, we only got 10 out of 15 correct, and the winning team got 14 right.  Every day, at 3:30pm, they went right into general knowledge trivia which is not one of our fortes, so that was our cue to head back to the cabin and get changed for the evening.

When we got back to our cabin, our cheese tray was waiting for us, as was the disembarkation questionnaire.  Today was day 3 of a 14 day cruise, so I thought it was a bit soon to be talking about disembarkation, but I assumed it was to give us priority on our preferred time slots before they asked the rest of the ship for their forms (or maybe everyone got their forms today, I really don’t know for sure).

We went down to the Martini Bar at 4:45pm and all the seats around the
bar were taken.  One of the ladies sitting there said we needed to arrive by 4pm to get a seat, but that is way too early if you ask me!  We would never be ready by then on a port day, and even if we were, we don’t need 3 hours of drinks before our 7pm dinner reservations (at least not if we want to enjoy our dinner at all!!).  Luckily, someone got up a minute later so we could take a seat, and one of the bartenders quickly took our order.  I always love when they pour multiple drinks at the same time!

I ordered a Sunset Martini, made with Grey Goose Le Citron vodka, Bacardi Coconut rum, pineapple juice, and grenadine.

A few minutes later, I noticed another bartender, Ketut, getting ready to put on a show by the Crush Bar, so I went over to check it out.  Ketut was my favorite bartender at the Martini Bar and we always tried to order from him because we thought he was the liveliest and had the best flair of the group. I am always so impressed that they can get the drinks into the correct glass without spilling!

BTW, this was a great use for the burst mode on my camera haha  Back at my seat at the bar, I was ready for round 2, so I ordered the Blue Wave Martini with Bombay Sapphire gin, peach schnapps, blue curacao, and lime juice.

One really fun feature of the Martini Bar is that the surface where you place your drinks is covered with a thin layer of ice. Make sure to always put your martini glass on a napkin or else it will stick to the ice and you may spill it when you try to pick it up!  DH found great amusement in drawing pictures in the ice while he sipped his drink. Here is today’s creation… a thirsty shark!

It’s so great that the Martini Bar is located just above the Grand Foyer so we can listen to the band performing downstairs while we enjoy our cocktails.  They are very talented and always played a great set!

After 2 drinks, we were ready to move along, but it was still too early for dinner.  Time for an impromptu photo shoot around the ship!

Those large pieces of art back near the specialty restaurants on deck 5 make for a great photo background.  On the way, we passed through the Ensemble Lounge, so we took at seat at the bar to try out a drink or two.  Unfortunately for us, we arrived right at 6pm and the bartender was extremely busy.  Not only does she make drinks for people sitting at the bar, but also for those sitting at the little tables around the lounge who order drinks from the bar waitress (who only takes drink orders but does not actually make any drinks), as well as drink orders from the specialty restaurants!  This is one very busy bartender and I was surprised she had to handle all of that by herself.  My guess is that service is a lot faster if you arrive here outside of dinner hours, but we rarely came back here so I don’t know for sure.  When we got her attention, I ordered a Kir Royale and I think DH had a beer.

A few minutes before 7pm, we made our way over to the dining room.  We requested to sit in Pinto’s section again, and the hostess said it was no problem, but for some reason, when we arrived at the table they wanted to seat us at, there was another couple sitting there.  The lady who escorted us to the table looked very confused, but just sat us at the next open table, which was unfortunately not in Pinto’s section.  At the time, we didn’t know what happened and why they assigned us to a table that was occupied, but towards the end of the cruise, we figured it out.  There was another couple who we saw escort themselves to their table.  They started to sit down and were saying that they like their waiter, Peter, but they were sitting at a table in Pinto’s section. Peter and Pinto have sections right next to each other, and I think this couple was confused and sat themselves at the wrong table, which was then assigned to us because the hostess didn’t know these people were sitting there.  Tonight, we sat at table 546, but we were assigned to table 545, and I have a hunch this couple just sat at the wrong table but meant to sit at 546.

The reason this was such a problem was that Peter and Erick were very slow as a wait team and our meal took an hour and 45 minutes, start to finish.  That was way too slow for our liking, so we talked to the hostess on the way out in hopes of getting back in Pinto’s section tomorrow.  She was a bit confused as to why we weren’t in his section tonight, but assured us she would do her best to seat us with Pinto tomorrow if there were tables available.

But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Here is tonight’s dinner menu:

Barolo Braised Beef Ragout

Sesame Crusted Tuna Carpaccio

Mediterranean Seafood Orzo

Lemon-Pepper Roasted Chicken

Roasted Beef Flank Steak

Dessert Menu

Apple Pie (minus the ‘a la mode’) from the classic menu

We left the dining room at 8:45pm, and hurried over to the World Class Bar to pick up a drink to bring to the theater for the show.  I tried the Celebrity No. Ten and really enjoyed it.  It was light and refreshing, and was conveniently served in an easy-to-carry glass haha

Tonight’s show was a comedian named Dan Grueter, and the daily schedule described his jokes as quick and clean.  I do not usually like when comedians resort to profanity and dirty jokes to get a laugh, so I was hopeful for these “clean” jokes. He was very funny, but he did not have a pre-written routine.  Instead, he talked to people in the first few rows of the audience and made jokes about them. I must have been very tired from all of the relaxing we did today because I nodded off towards the end of his show.  Luckily, we were sitting at the back of the room and he didn’t see me!

When the show ended, I went back to the cabin to pack up our bags for our first port day, while DH went to the atrium to listen to Hard Days Night.  I was fast asleep by the time he returned to the cabin, but he later told me the band was a lot of fun and I missed a good set.  I guess you can’t do everything on a cruise, and I needed my beauty sleep before arriving in St. Maarten tomorrow.

Step Tracker Daily Total:  6018 steps; 2.45 miles; 113 flights of stairs*

*So yea, I think it’s highly unlikely that I walked up 113 flights of stairs in one day haha  More likely, the strong winds that persisted all day today caused the ship to rock up and down, and I spent most of the day towards the forward end of the ship (in the Solarium and the Sky Lounge), and that end of the ship felt more movement than had I been mid-ship.  Very weird, but at least this was the last day I experienced glitches like that on my Fitbit.

Day 5: Monday, March 5 ~ Sea Day #1

Day 5: Monday, March 5 ~ Sea Day #1

Today’s daily schedule:

After going to sleep at 10:30pm last night, it was no surprise that we woke up bright and early at 8am today. Stepping out onto the balcony, we were confronted with cloudy skies and strong gusts of wind.

By the way, when we switched to this cabin, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about the diagonal support beams on the side of the balcony and the extra overhang from 2 decks above.  Honestly, I am not a fan of the diagonal support beams… they make it hard to take a good photo looking forward of aft from the balcony (and we all know I measure happiness in a location based on if I can take a good photo there haha).  Obviously these beams must be needed to support the upper decks, but I just wish they didn’t impact the view from our balcony.  On the bright side, I really liked having the extra overhang 2 decks above us.  I may not have liked it as much if I were up one deck on deck 11 where the extended roof was immediately above me, but being on deck 10 meant I had a little extra shade without much impact on my view.  In fact, if I looked straight out to the horizon, I didn’t notice the overhang at all.

If you look really closely at the horizon, you can see land… that’s Cuba.  We could see Cuba in the distance pretty much the entire day.  We hardly watched TV in our cabin during the cruise, but we frequently checked channels 5 and 6 for the navigation map and the bridge view.  It was always fun to check in on where we were in the Caribbean!

Our first stop of the day was downstairs to Café al Bacio so DH could get some good coffee.  While he placed his order, I salivated over the offerings in the pastry case.  These are all complimentary, even if you don’t order a drink here, but I wanted to save my appetite for breakfast.  At some point later in the morning, they remove these pastries and replace them with fancy cakes (also complimentary).

Another nice feature of Café al Bacio is that they serve the drinks in to go cups, so DH took his coffee to go and we went upstairs to get breakfast at the buffet.  As expected, it was very crowded with people walking in every direction, not yet knowing their way around the buffet.  I took a random assortment of carbs, knowing that I tend to eat eggs every port day morning and using today as a chance to try the other options.  I love that they offer smoked salmon and try to take advantage of that frequently, and I really liked the baked apple, but the French toast and the waffle were just okay.

After breakfast, we strolled around the ship until it was time for the Cruise Critic meet and greet in the Sky Lounge at 9:45am.  Originally when we first looked through the papers in our cabin yesterday, we had an invitation for the meet and greet at 10:15am in Cellar Masters, but when we got back to the cabin later last night, we had a revised invitation and a message on the phone that the event was moved up to the Sky Lounge to accommodate more people attending.  I wonder if a lot of people had trouble registering on the Celebrity website and went to guest services after boarding so they needed to change the venue?  The event was very well attended with over 100 passengers, and 5 or 6 ship officers including Captain Leo, Hotel Director Jamie, and the Cruise Director Eddy.  Jamie made a point of saying that he reads Cruise Critic to learn what we do and don’t like.  He mentioned that he has seen people complain that Celebrity no longer offers 14 day cruises, and he reassured us that once the 5 new ships finish construction and enter the fleet, more itineraries will be available.  He encouraged us to let him know early if something bothers us so he can do something to fix it, and not to wait until we get home to make complaints when it’s too late for him to do anything about it.  Fair enough!  The officers spoke for a few minutes and then left us to mingle amongst ourselves.  On our 2016 cruise, the Cruise Director did a question and answer session so we could ask him anything we had wanted to know, but they did not give us that opportunity today (at least not in an open forum… I am sure if someone had a question and asked them individually, they would have been happy to answer it.)

We stayed at the meet and greet for about 30 minutes, then left to find some
lounge chairs in the shade on deck 12 by the pool.  Surprisingly, we quickly found 2 seats together despite a healthy amount of chair hogs.  The 5 chairs opposite us remained vacant and reserved for over an hour.

I love that the pool bar staff makes frequent rounds with a drink cart stocked with water, soda, and beer, and others are walking around to take specific drink orders.  It really helps to keep me in full lazy mode hehe

Cruise Director Eddy hosted a music trivia game at the pool so we decided to play since we didn’t have to move and we could participate right from our lounge chairs.  The theme was Heaven and Angels, so every song had one of those 2 words in the title, and we had to guess the artist and title name for each of 15 songs, for 1 point each.  We did fairly well with a score of 16 and we were one of the top 10 scores, but I think the winner scored 20 points.  When you win any of the games or activities on board, you get a coupon which can be redeemed for a prize on the last day of the cruise, so it’s fun to have a little extra incentive to participate above just the glory of winning.

Eventually we got hungry for lunch, so we left our lounge chairs to grab a quick lunch.  I ran down to the MDR to check out the lunch menu, but decided against staying because I didn’t think I would finish eating fast enough to return to my lounge chair within 30 minutes.

Instead, I went back up to the Oceanview Café for the American BBQ themed lunch buffet.  I picked out a few things to try, including some delicious pineapple BBQ pork ribs, then went over to the Mast Grill for a cheeseburger and fries. There is just something about eating a cheeseburger by the pool that screams “vacation” to me!

We stayed at the pool area until 3pm when the Martini Bar opened,
and then we went down there so DH could upgrade to the premium beverage package.  Although any bartender on the ship can process this for you, I have read that whoever does your upgrade gets to keep the tips so we wanted to do it at a bar we knew we would spend a lot of time at.  When we got there, there was only 1 guy working so only DH did his upgrade and we decided to wait until another bartender was there for me to upgrade so we could spread out the tips.  It wasn’t like we were going to get a drink right then anyway, so I didn’t mind waiting a little longer to upgrade.

Next, we went upstairs to check out the afternoon hot glass show.  We immediately recognized Tom as one of the gaffers from our 2016 cruise, so it was nice to see a familiar face.  Unfortunately, it was very windy today so the gaffers were having some trouble working with the glass and they even dropped and broke a piece that was nearly finished! At least it was interesting to see that things don’t always turn out perfectly and to observe how they clean broken glass out of the oven before it melts.  We watched as they created 2 more pieces, including a cup with a pineapple texture on the outside, and a double-walled bowl that was created by both blowing and sucking the glass (I didn’t realize that was even possible haha)

After 45 minutes, we were too cold from the wind so we left to get ready for the evening. When we got back to the cabin, we found some special treats waiting for us.  Albertina delivered a cheese platter and a fruit platter.  We realized that this would be too much food for us to finish without spoiling our dinner appetite, and since the cheese platter has some fruit on it too, we ended up asking Albertina to skip the separate fruit platter from now on.  The one thing that we didn’t love was the saltines… does anyone actually like saltines?! We did see that there were better crackers at the buffet so we asked Albertina if we could have something besides saltines, but apparently this request was too complicated because it took until mid-way through the cruise before we accomplished this mission.  For the meantime, we enjoyed our cheese with saltines.

It was still very windy outside, but at least the clouds had cleared!  What a beautiful view!!

Tonight was the first Chic Night and we always like to get dressed up nicely, even though it is no longer considered “formal night”.  Instead of having the ship photographers take our photo for a fee, we asked a fellow passenger to take a photo on my camera for free.  It can be hard to find a good spot for a nice photo because the ship photographers always hog the best places, but we found a good spot near the Martini Bar.

Now that we’ve properly documented our fancy outfits, we could really get the evening started.  First up, we went to the Martini Bar where I ordered the Tropitini (another one of my favorites!), made with Grey Goose vodka, Bacardi Limon rum, blue curacao, and pineapple juice.

We still had some time before dinner so we went over to the World Class Bar.  I was surprised to find 5 other couples there when we arrived, since on our last cruise there was never anyone there.  I ordered my favorite cocktail from their menu- the Ciroc Tropically Yours.  It is like a gourmet pina colada.  Yum!

Just like in 2016, we opted for select dining for our dinners on this cruise.  I find the early seating to be too early on port days if we both need to shower and get changed after coming back on the ship (especially if we want to watch the sail away first!), and the late seating is just way too late for me (I would fall asleep at the table before they even served my entrée lol).  Before the cruise, I fought with the Celebrity website (possibly the worst part of cruising with this line!!) and used the vacation planner to book us 7pm dinner reservations for every night of the cruise.  Select dining is great as an alternative to the fixed seating times, but if you don’t make reservations in advance, they often need to give you a pager and you must wait until there is a table available.  My vacation time is too precious to wait with a pager, so I love that we can book reservations online before the cruise. We find that 7pm works well for us so we have time for a pre-dinner drink or two, and can finish our meal in time for the 9pm shows in the main theater each night.

When we arrived at the hostess desk at the Moonlight Sonata Main Dining Room, there was a short line before we got to the front. The 2 parties in front of us were both given pagers to wait for a table to open up, but we were seated immediately. I asked the hostess, Cervine, to seat us with a fun waiter because we hoped to like our team and request to eat in their section each night.  We were seated at a table for 2 with Pinto as our head waiter and Jose as the assistant waiter.

In the past, we have enjoyed sitting at large tables and getting to know other passengers while we dine.  That is not necessary on Celebrity because even though we had a table for 2, we were just a few inches from the tables on either side and couldn’t help but chat with our neighbors.  The added perk is that we find the larger tables lead to extremely long meals as you need to wait for them to fill the table, and then wait for everyone to finish each course before going to the next course (and inevitably someone orders more food or takes much longer to eat their food which holds up the rest of the table), and the whole process can take well over 2 hours from start to finish. By sitting at a table for 2, we could set the pace of our own meal but still chat with those around us, and whenever we are ready to leave, we can say good night and leave without feeling like we ditched the rest of our table before they were done.

Within seconds of sitting down, Jose brought us tonight’s dinner menu and explained the flavors of the 3 butters he left on the table to enjoy with our bread.  I very rarely eat bread before a meal at a restaurant, but on Celebrity, I make an exception because the flavored butters are just so yummy!

I mentioned to Pinto that we planned to share a few of the appetizers and a few entrees, and he offered to bring out all of the dishes for each course at the same time.  At the time, I liked that idea because it made it easier to share everything, but looking back, it also helped to speed the meal along because they didn’t serve each dish individually and we could eat as much of each dish as we wanted at our own pace.  Like I said… my vacation time is precious!

Chicken Liver Parfait

Salmon Tartare

Shrimp Scampi

Celebrity’s Signature Beef Tournedos

Roasted Colorado Rack of Lamb

Stuffed Portobello Mushroom (I kind of felt bad for any vegetarian who ordered this as their only entrée… it was quite small and we shared it as a side dish but I imagine if this was your only entrée that you would be quite hungry after dinner!)

Dessert Menu

Warm Apple Crumble (minus the ‘a la mode’)

Everything was delicious and we were done with our entire meal in an hour and 15 minutes… just how we like it!  That meant we had time for a drink at the Gastro Bar before going to the show.  The house band was performing in the Grand Foyer so we listened to them until it was time to get seats for the show in the theater.  One thing I really love about cruising with Celebrity is that they have so many live musicians playing throughout the ship.  There were many times when we had to pick between multiple options because there were just so many different musical acts on board… to clarify, this is a good problem to have! Haha  Between the solo guitarist, the strings duo, the house band, the dance band, the acoustic duo, and of course the Eclipse orchestra performing many shows with the singers and dancers on board in the main theater, there is always something to suit everyone’s taste.

At 8:45pm, we went over to the theater to find seats for the show and it was already one third full.  Tonight’s show was called Topper and featured the singers and dancers on board, backed by the Eclipse orchestra.  The basic plot is that a man has a giant top hot and he locks people inside it to keep them around as his friends.  The show teaches the lesson that if you let these people go free, they will voluntarily return to hang out with you and you don’t have to keep them in captivity. I’m not sure how I felt about that plotline, but it didn’t really matter because I greatly enjoyed all of the pop music and costumes throughout the show.  Plus, anytime the aerial acts perform is a win in my book!

The show was one hour long, so when it ended at 10pm, we went straight upstairs to the Sky Lounge to listen to the house band play at the Motown theme party.  I was really surprised at how crowded it was up there!  Maybe because it was the first of 2 consecutive sea days and people could sleep late this morning and tomorrow morning, but there was quite a lively crowd for so late at night.

We left at the end of their set to go back to the cabin and get some rest after a wonderful first day a sea.

StepTracker Daily Total:  7139 steps; 2.91 miles; 82 flights of stairs*

*When my Fitbit said I did 33 flights of stairs yesterday, I believed it because we opted for the stairs over the elevator many times (including the 10 flights of stairs to get from our muster station to the sail away party).  Something tells me I did not actually walk up 82 flights of stairs today!  More likely, this can be attributed to the strong winds causing the ship to rock and roll… up and down… all day long.  We spent most of the day sitting today, but maybe the flights tracker got confused and interpreted that as me walking up a flight of stairs?  I don’t know for sure, but just wait until you see my flight total for tomorrow!!

Tuesday, September 12, 2017 ~ Sea Day

image

Today was our one and only sea day on this 10-day cruise, so we planned to make the most of the day off from hectic port days. As you can see in the daily schedule, they planned a lot more activities for us to do on board today as compared to the days we were in port.

image
image
image
image

We woke up at 7:45am (how wonderful to sleep a little later and not need to set an alarm clock!), and went to breakfast at La Veranda.

image

I spent the next 2 hours sitting in the comfy chairs in the hallway of Deck 5, catching up with my notes in my trip journal.  I loved how quiet and deserted it was down there in the morning (there was definitely more action here in the evening with people going to the casino and piano bar!)

image

The only reason I moved was because they set up a game of Bingo at the piano bar at 10:30am, so I went upstairs to Deck 8 to give them space to play.  Looks like everyone was enjoying the warm sunny day!

image

Nothing but sky and water for as far as the eye can see!

image

As tempting as it was to lay out on one of those loungers, I don’t always get
along so well with direct sun light.  My mission was to stay indoors as much as possible today since it was the one day that I could avoid the sun (as opposed to all the beach and water-based tour days when it was unavoidable).  As you can see, there isn’t much shade on the pool deck aside from the 2 little sections near the pool bar and near the bathrooms, but all the seats were taken already.  I didn’t want to miss out on the pretty views by hiding downstairs all day, so I got creative.  There are a bunch of tables lining the glass wall of Le Grill.  They weren’t serving any food at this time because it was between breakfast and lunch times, so DH and I set up camp at one of the tables. It was quiet and had a light breeze, and we could look out through the floor to ceiling windows to watch the action around the pool, but we were totally in the shade.  Win, win!

We even had easy access to the pool bar so I got to try today’s drink of the day:  Island Affair, with blue curacao, triple sec, melon liquor, and orange juice.

image

We stayed here until noon when they started serving lunch, and then helped ourselves to our mid-day feeding! Today’s buffet theme was Italian.

After lunch, DH and I split up… he went down to the Grand Salon to watch a presentation about Paul Gauguin.  Later in the day, he told me it was actually a movie, and while he enjoyed it, it was a bit long at 2 hours.

I went to La Palette to listen to Les Gauguines talk about life on board the PG.  They were very candid in sharing their inner secrets.  Here’s a few of the tidbits I learned…

1) They go through a casting process in Tahiti, and while they should know how to sing and dance, it is not essential as they also go through training to
learn all the songs and dances.

2) While they are required to speak English as that is how they communicate with guests, they should not speak the language too fluently because then it wouldn’t seem authentic! Haha

3) They work 4-6 month contracts, and then take 1-2 months off.

4) There are 7 of them in total… 5 women and 2 men.  1 of the women was not on board for our sailing (I think they said something about her being sick?).  Of the 6 remaining Gauguines, 2 are single, 2 are dating people off the ship, and 2 are dating each other!  I would think that is normally frowned upon (what if they break up? Will that make for an awkward work environment??), but I guess it’s not an issue on the PG!

5) They are very proud to have these prestigious jobs and to be able to share their culture with us, but they know this will not be a lifetime career as it is hard to be away from their families for so long.  When they do leave the PG, they will mostly seek jobs in the tourism industry, and having PG as an employer on their resume will make it easy to find a job at one of the other resorts on land.

I really enjoyed the talk and found it very interesting, so I would definitely
recommend you take the time to chat with them or attend the talk if you
can.  When it ended, DH and I met up again at the Piano Bar for the 3pm game of Name That Tune.  Alex gave us a different question sheet from what we tried the other day, but it was equally as hard.

image

Alex is used to playing these songs with a flowery flourish when he plays background music at the bar, but that doesn’t work as well when we are trying to guess the song he is playing!  It was really hard to recognize the name of the song, but we somehow managed to get 9 correct out of 26 songs, and that earned us 2nd place!!

When the game ended, it was tea time… ya know, because it’s been a whole 3 hours since we last ate lol

image
image
image

While we were near the pool bar, I grabbed some kind of yummy frozen fruity drink

image
image

At 5pm, we went back upstairs to La Palette for karaoke.  There was a much bigger crowd today than there was the other night, so we had fun watching and singing along until it was time for sunset. There’s nothing quite like watching the sun set from an outside deck on a cruise ship…

image
image
image
image

As per our usual routine, we headed downstairs for pre-dinner drinks at the piano bar.  The waiters passed out some tasty small bites for us to nibble on.

image

When we arrived at L’Etoile, we were immediately seated at a table for 2, but we spent so much time chatting with the couple seated at the table next to us that we still turned it into a two and a half hour meal!

Celebrity Equinox ~ Day 12

Thursday, March 24 ~ Sea Day

Today was our last sea day and we had to move our clocks ahead one hour again last night.  I woke up at 8am and spent an hour packing while J slept a little longer.  Once he was awake, we went upstairs to the Oceanview Cafe for breakfast at the buffet.  I really liked that they had waiters walking around to take drink orders.  It is hard enough to juggle a plate of food and silverware without a tray, so the drink waiters made it so we had one less thing to carry around the buffet.  With no real plans for today other than relaxing and soaking up every last minute of our time on the Equinox, we opted for some real drinks at breakfast!

Paris Screwdriver and Celebrity Bloody Mary

image

Outside of the buffet, they had a map showing the course we traveled during the cruise.  On other cruises, I have seen live maps which showed where the ship was in addition to where we had been, but this map stayed static all week.

image

This morning, there were a few activities in the big theater that we were interested in checking out.  The first was a presentation about ship navigation given by Staff Captain Matthew.  He explained the process of making a cruise itinerary and knowing how long it takes to get from port to port and how to look at the sea maps.  He spoke for about 20 minutes and we thought it was very informative about things that we never really knew much about.

image

After that, there was a Q&A session with Hotel Director Jamie and Captain Costas for about 45 minutes.  The Captain was very funny and approachable, and we learned a lot of interesting facts about life on the ship and how things work behind the scenes.

image

After the talk, we went back up to the buffet for lunch.  While we were in the elevator, I looked up and saw the Captain was in the elevator with us.  I realized there was a question I didn’t get to ask him at the Q&A so I figured I had his company for a few seconds in the elevator, so why not ask now? He was so friendly and didn’t mind chatting with me at all.  He was even nice enough to pose for a picture with us when we got off the elevator!

image

Apparently I was slacking on this last day of the cruise as I didn’t take any photos of my breakfast or my lunch!  I think J had another burger from the mast grill and I had some things from the buffet.  After we finished lunch, we went down to the Slush bar to try the last 2 drinks we hadn’t tried yet. So for those of you keeping track, this was the first bar where we accomplished tasting all of the drinks over the course of the cruise!

Walking through the pool area, we noticed that the chair hogs were out in full force today!  We actually noticed this a lot over the whole cruise. Whenever we walked through the pool area or the solarium, we often saw more lounge chairs being occupied with books, hats, and water bottles than with people!  We found 2 empty chairs surrounded by loungers and chairs being hogged by people who were no where to be seen.  We sat and listened to an acoustic guitar player near the pool, and none of these people returned to their chairs while we were there.  I have no idea how long they were gone or if/when they came back to their chairs, but I wished Celebrity did a better job at patrolling this.

image

We spent some time relaxing on our balcony this afternoon, and a little more time packing.  At around 3pm, I wanted to get my free scoop of gelato so we went downstairs.  I loved how there was a tree hanging in the middle of the space between the glass elevators.  It was such a unique feature on a cruise ship and looked so elegant floating there in the middle of the lobby.

image

When I went to get my free scoop of gelato, there was a different lady working from last night, and she let me get sprinkles on my scoop of mint chip ice cream!  Score! While we were there, we noticed they were doing the auction from the hot glass show.  As part of their contract with the Corning Museum of Glass, the gaffers get to auction off 7 pieces that were made at their shows during our cruise. I had no intentions of bidding, but it was fun to watch the process.  Some of those pieces sold for over $2000, and all of the money goes to charity, so it was all very exciting.

image

Before we knew it, it was time to get ready for the evening.  Before dinner, we stopped by the martini bar so we could try the last 2 martinis on our list (another bar that we fully completed!)

A Cosmo and a Peartini

image

When we got to the hostess stand for our 7pm dinner reservations, Gorica said there was a wait tonight and she had to give us a beeper if we wanted to sit with our normal waiters.  I guess more people show up to dinner on the last night of the cruise?  I was sad to have a beeper and a wait time, but there was no chance we would skip sitting with our favorite waiters and miss the chance to say goodbye to them!!

image

The wait wasn’t very long, and once we were seated, the service was excellent as always.

For some reason, the French Onion Soup had more black pepper in it tonight so I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did earlier in the week…

image

After dinner, we went back to the cabin to throw a few extra things in our big checked suitcase so we could put it out in the hallway on time for the stewards to collect it.  I think the bags had to be out in the hall by 10pm.

The final show of the cruise was a medley of Broadway songs by 6 of the singers from the production shows.  This had the potential to be a great show, but they picked songs from obscure shows that I have never seen (and I have seen over 70 shows on Broadway!)… Miss Saigon, Bridges of Madison County, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Company to name a few. They sang a song from Dream Girls, but I only knew that song because I’ve seen the movie, not the Broadway show.  They ended the show with songs from Wicked and Les Mis so at least we knew both of those songs too.  The singers had fabulous voices, likely because they picked songs that suited their range (as opposed to the songs assigned to them in the production shows which weren’t always so great), but the show would have been more fun if they sang songs from more popular shows.

image

After the show, we tried the last two drinks from the World Class Bar menu, so that was the third bar list we completed!

image

There was an 80’s dance party at Quasar so we spent the rest of the night dancing until midnight!  After that, we went up to the buffet for some pizza, and noticed that the pool looked so beautiful all lit up at night.

image

We did not have any drinks on Friday before debarking, so our quest to try every drink on the ship ended tonight.  Although we did not accomplish our mission, I think we did a pretty good job over the last 11 days.  We drank about ¾ of the drinks on the menus on the ship, and a lot of the ones we didn’t try was because either we couldn’t find a bar to make that drink or because the ship didn’t have the drink on board (most of the wines!)  It was fun to be on this quest, and our dining room waiters and sommelier as well as the bartenders we went to most often all knew about our mission and were eager to help us achieve our goals.  Throughout the week, they asked us about our progress and helped to find new drinks for us to check off the list. You will also notice the little D or J next to each drink and a + or – sign… we marked off who had each drink (or used no initial if we both tried it) and a + if we loved it or a – if we didn’t like it (no + or – meant it was neutral haha).  At least now we’ll know the best drinks to go for on our Eclipse cruise!! Here is a photo of the list at the end of the cruise…

Celebrity Equinox ~ Day 10

Tuesday, March 22 ~ Sea Day

We woke up bright an early at 7:30am without an alarm after a deep 9+ hours of sleep.  Since we had a few minutes before the MDR opened for breakfast, I spent some time playing with the interactive options on the TV in our cabin. This was my first time having an interactive TV like this on a cruise, and prior to sailing, I was very curious about what each of the screens did.  Here is a photo of each of the screens, as well as the photo viewing page and the view from the bridge.

I was a bit disappointed that the MDR dinner menu was not listed on the TV… when you click on that option, it says to look for the menu outside the dining room!  Gee, thanks for that! lol

At 8am, we headed downstairs for breakfast at the MDR.  We opted to sit at a large table for 10 people, and a few of them were talking about how much they disliked the comedian last night.  Glad to hear it wasn’t just me!

I liked how they served everything I ordered on the same plate as it made for less clutter on the table!

This is the wine rack at the back of the dining room. When we took the Galley Tour last week, they told us what it cost and how many bottles it holds, but I totally can’t remember those numbers anymore!

After breakfast, we wanted to sit on our balcony for a bit, but it was in the sun so we decided to go up to the Solarium instead. I figured, why spend time burning in the sun on a sea day when there are lots of shaded options? Let’s save the sunburns for days at the beach!  There were lots of chaises available when we arrived at 9:30am so we set up camp for over 2 hours as J napped and read his Kindle and I took notes in my trip journal for this review.  At some point, we ordered some frozen drinks from the waiter- I love that they walk around to take drink orders so we could be very lazy and not get up! haha

As a side note, I was very impressed at how clean the bathroom was at the pool.  I avoid the pool bathroom on Carnival as it is always a mess with wet slippery floors, but this pool bathroom was immaculate, even on a hot and busy sea day!

We got up to get lunch at noon.  J had a burger from the grill and I wanted the stir fry noodles at the buffet.  Sadly, they didn’t have that today (after a bit of investigating, I learned that they only serve it for lunch on port days… when most people are off the ship and can’t enjoy it), and nothing else appealed to me.  J took one for the team and offered to eat again with me at the MDR.  This was my first time having lunch in the MDR on any cruise as I am used to having a late brunch on all my other cruises.

I really enjoyed the fried mushrooms, and they had stir fry udon noodles so I could have that after all!  J ordered a salad and a hot dog, and he enjoyed that as well.

We were pleased to see our balcony was in the shade by the time we returned from lunch, so we spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying the lovely breeze and warm but comfortable temperatures.

At around 3pm, we ventured out to pick up drinks from the Slush Bar and brought them back to drink on the balcony. The Mint Cookie drink is seriously amazing!!

Tonight was the second and final Elegant Chic night for dinner.  We got dressed up and made our way up to the Oceanview Cafe for a quick pre-dinner snack. I noticed they had these cute little dishes with various salads and a seafood ceviche that was calling my name!

Each of the elevator banks has this list of the public spaces on each of the decks, and a mini model of the ship showing where the venues are located (forward, mid-ship, or aft).  It was especially helpful in the beginning of the cruise when we were still learning our way around the ship.

As always, we had a few drinks at the Martini Bar before going to dinner. This is the Sapphire London Club and the Pomegranate Martini.

Tonight’s dinner menu featured the one and only time we saw lobster in the MDR.

The Creamy Salmon Rillette was amazing!  It tasted like lox cream cheese- we were tempted to bring some back to the cabin to spread on a bagel for breakfast tomorrow haha

Arsapha hooked me up with 2 lobster tails on the same plate as I didn’t need double the side dishes.

We skipped dessert tonight, likely because we weren’t that hungry, and went back to the martini bar to try the black forest chocolate martini.  I don’t have a photo of it, but it was very sweet and acted like a dessert!  We listened to the band play in the lobby for a few minutes, then went to the theater for the final production show: Elysium.

This show had a similar format to the other production shows and again featured modern top 40 songs, but they only featured the aerialists and acrobats in 2 of the songs and instead had a lot of dancing performances.  I liked it, but thought the other shows earlier in the week were better.

After the show, we went to Quasar for karaoke, but it was a poor turn out yet again.  The karaoke host, Crystal, asked J to sing a duet to Love Shack in hopes of getting people to come participate and sing other songs, but we didn’t stick around long after their song to find out if it worked.

We went up to the Sky Lounge for 70’s music trivia and it was PACKED! After a bit of searching, we found a seat up by the front windows and did our best to participate.  Cruise director John came out dressed up in a 70’s outfit and asked the questions for the trivia.  He played a little bit of a song, then asked 3 or 4 questions about it- title, song writer, what album it was on, and also some more obscure questions to which we seldom knew the answers.  In the end, we only got about 25% correct… oh well!  It was definitely a fun way to spend an hour of our evening, and then we went back to our cabin to get some sleep.
